You are both correct. Babylon has different meanings, as it represents control on different levels. You can give it a specific reference ( such as the police, media, government ) or you can interpret it as the energy of oppression that exists in the world.

I remember when I saw the Fugees concert in Australia back in 1996 L sat down and did a number by herself on guitar and no other accompaniment. Cant remember what the song was.

Ok so when I read this thread, my immediate reaction was to feel pissed that Clef talking Lauryn yet again, but then I heard the interview and parts of it cracked me up. Ok so yes Clef needs to stop saying she bipolar and stuff and he got a bit of ego saying Mised about him ( albeit it prob is ). YOu know what? As unprofessional as it is, him going on air and saying this, its mad interesting cause he's so candid in his manner, its almost like overhearing a private conversation he having with someone. Him telling the way he saw it. I also think its not about forming alliances with Team Clef or Team Lauryn because the truth is somewhere in the middle. We heard Clef's side of their working relationship, whereas Lauryn hasn't directly addressed this, yet talked about issues in her interviews. Themes like being taken advantage of and compromised. Its really easy to be swayed and empathetic to the person explaining it in their turn. Like in the past when Lauryn said her piece, Id be like totally in accord with her. And, to be honest, when Clef is talking about how L is erratic in her mood and difficult to work with, I kind of empathise with him.
And that quip about "Get back to the room" was funny.

I like the fact she isnt afraid to do something really left of centre, like that cowboy leather jacket thing with the frills on the back and the rosy red cheeks and like golfer pants. Has she dyed her hair too, or is just the lights in the photos that make it look lighter? I loved what she wore in Africa, like the motorcycle jacket with a lace / doylie kinda dress. Who thinks that way? Thing is, she's not gonna win any best dressed lists cause she's not playing by conventional fashion rules. But who makes these rules anyway?

This makes me nostalgic. ANyone got the CNN interview with Lauryn back in 93 or 94? They did a story on her right after Sister Act2, and it showed her going to classes at Columbia and performing with the Fugees at some club. THis was before the Score and probably around the time of Blunted. It was a wicked little doc prob 5 - 10 mins? Oh man I wish I had taped it, but how was I to know right? If anyone got it, please post. CNN - where you at?

Ive always been a fan of not just the music, the clothes and style of Ms Hill, all of which obviously has evolved with her own evolution over the years, but the way she moves in her shows is killer. I know a lot of people have already discussed her look now as opposed to the Fugees era and even the Mised era, but physically the way she performs now is soooo different aswell. And Im sure the fans would have noticed the changes.
I wonder if its a conscious decision she makes, about the way she moves and physically expresses herself or if its just a natural discovery and a flow she feels. I wonder if she takes from other performers and tries to make a move her own. Maybe the groove and the feel of the music from the shows kinda dictates it ( as opposed to the sound she used in the mis-ed days )
She always was unique in that. I remember watching the Fugees and loved the way she would hold the mic with her 2 fingers over the top of it and 2 fingers underneath. How she would sort of do this swagger to the beat walking sideways and point to the crowd. There really was no other female performer I can think of, who moved like that.
I was just watching one of the live peformances, the new ones, I think it was in Belgium and she was doing the lost ones/naughty dread combo. I know this might sound odd but it kind of reminded of like Shirley Bassey or Judy Garland. How those performers as they got a bit older how they voices get deeper and more heavy in a way. But also the way the movements get really theatrical and exaggerated, like somehow they are feeling it deeper than before. And how she wants to yell it out more. How she now throws her hands around and tips her head really quickly, almost shamanically. Im also seeing a heavy Bob Marley influence, obviously cause she singing it a lot, but the way she kinda jumps and drops down and shakes the way Marley did, especially when she does Zimbabwe.
What y'all thoughts people?

Its funny when the interviewer talks about her sister's hit "Pump up the Jam" and Lauryn starts singing it and cracks up. I kept replaying that bit and laughing

I agree with Sybille. Her voice sounds somtimes like Joss Stone, Nelly Fortado and Marcy grey. And sometimes like a imitation of Lauryn Hill ( Rehab) I think she had to finde her own Style and sound. Cuz thereis no L-Boogie groove in her sound. I would like to hear Lauryn Hill with Caron Wheeler or with Sade. THAT would be Great. Peace!! I thought Amy sounded like Shirley Bassey when I first heard it. I think the link here is the production. Lauryn and Amy both worked with Salaam Remi who is one of my favourite favourite producers so there is some kind of bridge in their sound. And plus I think Mark Ronson would be a good choice of producer for Lauryn to work with as he would be able to bring that authentic quality.
