Hi, supermoonface, I enjoyed reading your perspective on Ms. Hill's performance. It's funny how we all listen with different ears. I'm not much of a technical listener. If my spirit and soul are touched, then I'm good. So I appreciate all you guys who can evaluate from a more technical point of view.

I was a little disappointed with this performance, not with Ms. Hill but rather for her. I agree she did not seem happy to be there in contrast with the Fallon performances. She sounded sick and tired. We all know what her voice can do when fully rested and how hard she works even when it's not at full health. Most other artists would have mimed this performance in similar circumstances but not Lauryn. She is LIVE every time and that's part of why I listen Random conjecture alert: We have all heard how when singers have vocal stress they are told to rest their voices, particularly no talking, it's regarded as essential to allow recovery. However as Lauryn is both a singer and a rapper her voice is under constant stress, and that's before you factor in sickness, stress etc. In the studio you can record the vocals one week and the rap later. This is not possible live. To stay fully live and authentic, which is what Appeals to me, you have to accept the opportunity cost of a loss of execution sometimes. Check out ex factor from Copenhagen in 2007 - I believe she collapsed during this tour from exhaustion and the vocals were all over the shop but it is still one of my favourite performances. The circumstances during that tour pushed the creativity to another level. Her "bag of tricks" is larger now than ever at times she reminds me of Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn Highs are meaningless without lows This post may have been shorter if I lurked a little less I just posted a similar comment on youtube as a reply to someone being "pissed off" that she hadn't taken care of her voice. It's hard though as you said being a rapper/singer. There's a lot of stress on the voice when you rap live, because usually you are using your voice at a higher voice. It's like yelling for two hours. And then what? You lose your voice..develop nodes...etc. I actually think this performance would have been better without the band. The band overshadowed her voice, and took away from the rawness..But I like that seems to be trying to control what she does with her voice a little more. She didn't try to go for too much and that is a good thing. I kinda wish it was a Stevie WOnder tribute lol

Its funny when people say Lauryn did not take care of her voice, have you guys not notice that Lauryn's voice has consistently changed? Lauryn did not have the same voice during the miseducation period that she had during the fugues. She did not have the same voice during the unplugged era that she had during the miseducation era. She did not have the same voice around 2005 that she had during the unplugged era. She does not currently have the same voice she had around 2005. People age, and women have children; this all affects the vocal cords. Even Beyonce's voice has gotten deeper since giving birth. Aretha's voice is not the same, all these artist voices change. Even our voices change!

@ Oprah Guest, I agree with you on this one. Her performance on Letterman was good to me, people like to criticise Lauryn even if its unnecessary they want her to go on stage and create miracles which I think its ridiculous. I will give her credit because her recent live performances have been really good. You have sleazy Miley Cyrus, overrated Adele, untalented Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Katy Perry performing on stage giving lousy live shows and getting away with it because they are currently media darlings but people are harsh on Lauryn of which I think she is a great performer far much better than all these girls I have mentioned even on her worst day. People really need to stop with the negativity.

Please don't get me wrong, I also liked this performance. For me MLH could sing, rap or fart the phone book and still find a way to convey genuine emotion while oozing musicality. My comments were only intended to highlight some of the practicalities associated with maintaining a voice. I agree voices change over time and even from hour to hour sometimes lol - but as someone who sings from time to time I know how frustrating it is when you want to take a song somewhere and your instrument will not cooperate. I don't expect MLH's voice to be technically perfect every time, I love the imperfections, they only add to the character I used the word dissapointed but a better description would be empathy for imagined frustration. I only wanted to make people who criticise her voice maybe stop and think a little more rationally about the subject. As an aside it seems rediculous to me when people say Whitney Houston wasted her talent. WH was one the most commercially successful and highly regarded singers of all time. I don't see how that could be regarded as a waste by any metric but people still say it. For me the tradegy of WH was that she was not able to tranistion her success into a lasting happiness for herself, not that she did not make ten more albums. people always want more it seems. MLH decided to sort out the happiness bit first it seems which is to me a great lesson, the poor man built his house on the sand and the house on the sand felt flat and all that. goodness I do go on ! Closing thought - next time you visit your doctor, ask how they are and mean it ooh and thanks for the warm welcome

I lied - not quite done yet people seem to gave forgotten what live music is like. With autotune used even on supposedly live performances and miming at concerts the norm we have reached the point where audience expections have exceeded what is practical to deliver Thank goodness there are artists out there who book the trend As a case in point I remember reading the sleeve notes to Jill Scott's first live album ( which I love ) where it mentioned that to capture those performances they recorded the whole tour and selected the best night. I think the term used was trapping lightening in a bottle, the album was even titled after the date of that night. Live performances are always variable that's why they are so special. Lucky for me sterilized music does not appeal To my mind one of greatest live albums of all time is Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace. Even that album was re dubbed in part and condensed from two nights shows (luckily later restored and released in it's entirety The point is that there really is nothing in modern times to compare truly live performances to, even those highly regarded from the past are a snapshot of someone on their best day One exception to this is Nina Simone who to me to this day is the single greatest artist at communicating emotion to an audience - check out For a while from Ronny Scott's and Feelings from the MJF. It's like their is no barrier at all between her and audience . I think it is shush time for me now

@ Supermoonface-Gotta love a musiclover! And welcome, btw!
I made that comment cuz she was literally sick with a stomach virus and had to cancel her concert the very next night. There was some controversey and she released a statement explaining that she pre recorded the Letterman performance. Some thought she cancelled the concert to do Letterman instead.
Observant, intelligent perspectives are always welcome!

What a beautiful appearance ! Love it. She looks a little sick, this is the only negative thing in the performance.
Some people say her voice has changed. Yes it has changed, but she still beautiful. She has not loose her voice, she grows old: on The Miseducation, she was 23 years old, now 37. A voice changes with time and her voice is still gorgeous.
Listen to Michael Jackson's Thriller and his las album Invincible: Jackson voice on this 2 album are very different. On Invincible, he has a gravelly voice, masts. On Thriller, we hear a very young, angelic voice. It's 2 voices of a same man, but 2 gorgeous voices.
