I've read selah twitter a few times and the fact that she buys her 13-14 year old kid luxury items and that the kid flaunts them makes me feel weird when i hear this song. I love fashion and beautiful things them but i would never buy my teenage kid a $5,000 bag even if i was a millionaire...So when i hear her sing about consumerism, it kinda irks me. I still hope for an album though

I still hope for an album though I understand your concern, but we should be honest. Lauryn may dress differently, but her wardrobe has always come with a substantial price attached. She often dresses directly from the runway. I don't think her concern is necessarily with the purchase of luxury goods. The fact that she does not shop at Wal-mart for her family doesn't invalidate her position on consumerism. I have never heard her advocate the purchase of any brand rather luxury or otherwise. I think she is more inline with this definition of consumerism I found on wiki. " Consumerism" is a force from the marketplace which destroys individuality and harms society.[4] It is related to globalization and in protest to this some people promote the "anti-globalization movement".[5] Lauryn always talks about how everything is reduced to a bottom line. Her inability to create the art she wants because some suit thinks it will not sell etc. The control and manipulation of young minds. I think she has spelled out her position on her website. Also, our children no matter what we preacher seem to always have their own mind.

My opinion is that when Lauryn writes she isn't necessarily excluding herself from the message. Based on the past, her messages sort of seem to be for herself more than anything. That notion comes across during the Unplugged session, doesn't it? Also didn't she say one time her music would be to teach her kids? LOL Maybe she wrote it for her daughter. lol

Also, our children no matter what we preacher seem to always have their own mind. I see your point, maybe mine was not that clear. I am aware of the fact that she has often dressed with designer clothes, I am one of the many admirers of her style. Also I know that the consumerism that she refers to is more than simple consumption and that it really deals with the nihilistic ideas rampant in modern societies, hence the " kinda irks me". It would be simplistic to ask her to live according to the "cliché" revolutionary lifestyle . It's just that when you decide to tackle the issues she sings about, you should be careful with not appearing as "holier than thou". I don't know, I guess everything that has been revealed about her these past years made me kinda of see her differently, I sometimes feel that her private life has nothing to do with what she seems to preach. Even if our children (especially teens) have their own personality, they're often a reflection of at least a part of us. When I saw Selah flaunting dollars bills and luxury bags it really surprised me, and I have to admit it, even disappointed; she was acting like I imagined Beyonce's daughter would do. Of course social media gives only a glimpse of people's life and should not be used to judge them, so maybe I am totally off base. I just hope that she's not one of those "do-what-i-say-but-not-what-i-do" people. PS: Re: " I have never heard her advocate the purchase of any brand rather luxury". Don't you remember "nappy heads": "Check the square roots, Girbauds and Timberland boots". LOL J/K :-)

Don't want to get too much into Ms Selah. In addition to her addiction to high fashion, Selah appears to take on a tremendous amount of responsibility in taking care of her younger siblings. She seems to be very loving and caring. She also posted a very challenging curriculum. She has all honors and AP classes. So, her mother may simply be rewarding her for all the hard work she puts into helping her. Also, I am sure she has had a tremendous burden this past year. So, don't be so quick to judge.

if you read my second post, you'll see that i tried my best not to judge people i don't know. it's a celebrity message board, i discussed that kinda bothered me, that's it. it was not all about Selah either. it's cool to know she helps her mother.

I didn't get that feeling about this song Maryseo, but totally understand why you would. I was very confused/disappointed about the hypocrisy I felt Ms Hill conveyed when she played a concert in Israel a couple of years ago. I would imagine she wouldn't have played South Africa during apartheid, but maybe I'm wrong, maybe she would. I'd love to ask her. Surely she believes the systematic murder and oppression of a people should be met with the same measure, no matter if they are Jewish, Palestinian, White, Black, Brown....? Very confusing.
p.s loving the video for Consumerism! Very fitting.
Love! x

Love! x I had not read your message emancip8urself and i'd like to answer to you. i won't go into a lengthy rant about the conflict in itself as it is a very sensitive issue. I personally believe it will never end, not in this lifetime actually even if I pray for peace since at the end of the day children and women are the first casualties. To me it's like a conflict between brothers that has been passed along (it 's like descendants of Israel and Ismael both claim their sole entitlement to their father's land . It will not end till a judge settles the case and one of the party has influential supporters and we. Know it's not the PLO ). As for Lauryn going to Israel I always felt it was like going to talk to the oppressor on behalf of the oppressed. And as a Christian maybe she considers Israel her Holy land. Also we don 't know what happened behind the scenes. But I do understand your concern.

Please remember that a government very often does NOT represent the people...esecially the kind of peoe who would want to attend a Ms. Lauryn Hill concert! She mentions making Salat and speaks Arabic at the intro to a song. This may offend the government, but the people...
I HATE many American government policies. I never got to see Nina Simone perform, mostly because she hated coming to the US!
Personally, I don't see the point in boycotting a region of the Earth unless not performing there is actually going to influence the government's behavior! The thing is, with oppressive gov'ts, the people's feeling matter not at all! IF an artist is able to perform in a place where people are oppressed or have extreme views forced upon them, in my opinion, they DEFINITELYshould! That way, they can uplift and inspire them! People in some places need a positive message of universal love so desperately! Jesus walked amongst the sinners...ijs
