Lauryn is no dummy, on tumblr she stated, "Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it’s level." Its obvious Lauryn knows songs like these will not reach the masses ie consumerism.

Jena: i understand your point and i must admit that i didnt really like Neurotic society because i felt there was too much going on lyrically, it's like she was just listing à bunch of words. But even though the same critique could be made about this one, i like it, esp because of the delivery which i find amazing and the production that is quite unique. And she is back to rapping!!! I think it's too early to judge what's the new album will sound like based on these two joints. She is an artist not merely a singer or a rapper anymore, she is going to try new things and hopefully invite us to her journey. I am grateful for these songs because I remember a time when I thought she would never release new music again. And if we can safely assume that she does not intend to focus on the "groove" like she used to, i don't think these songs represent her new sound. I think these pieces are her introduction to her ideas. And something tells me the next album will sound like a mix of all her works since the fugees days. I am so curious to hear what's next! I took to "Neurotic Society" right away; I really like that song. This one, is one I'm going to have to warm-up to. I hope you're right about this not representing her new sound, cause Imma need some groove...or a little something less cerebral. I'm grateful, too, tho--if she's happy with where she's at right now, musically, then that's cool!

Consumerism is a track coming out on the eve of Ms. Hill's release. She wanted to get this music out while she was incarcerated, as it is a product of the space she was in while she was going through some of the challenges she has been faced with recently.
Available now on iTunes: bit.ly/MLH_C "Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in. We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn't imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it's level." - Ms. Lauryn Hill soundcloud.com/mslaurynhill/ms-lauryn-hill-consumerism-1

I believe she is about to drop a mixtape and the song she put out in May and the one she just dropped lastnight will be on it. Her new album she's working on will be out next year as well as a tour. As far as the direction she plans to take.....that's the mystery

lol I don't even know what to say. Lauryn must not gof about music anymore. She should just release a book of literary works. What she's saying may be good, but the music isn't. imo It's too chaotic to be enjoyable. No groove. It's just her going off over a lot of noise. lol I realize it is most likely intentional(because nobody accidentally makes a song that crazy) and the noise is probably suppose to be some kind of "artistic expression", but I don't get the point. Why has she abandoned the concept of putting her message to music people can groove to? I don't get it and I can't listen to this song nor Neurotic Society. Both songs I'd rather just read the words to than to ever hear them again. CTFU! Excuse me, but that was funny! I understand what you mean. Truly! I enjoy listening to and deciphering the messages, but when I want to hear any groove-Nope. I think this kind of sound has its place though. I do like the two tracks (love the bass), but they are definitely "obverse creations"! I have a feeling that this sound will be retired after this third mandatory single though. She will have made her point.

What a mess! Jena I totally agree with you, there is absolutely nothing in there that has pulled me in. Why rap that fast when you're trying to put a message across that you want people to hear or grasp. It's a ridiculous shambles and many times has this 'new' album talk been on circulation in the last ten years. People on here need to stop assuming and giving into false or weak reports on whether or not an album is coming. I'm upset because I've been waiting almost half my life being 30 now. Bring back the groove and positive vibrations, not this 'I'm so angry at the world' conspiracy theory' mind warfare carry on' YES!! LAURYN... We get it! After ten years of singing the same theme... WE GET IT!!!!!

Lauryn doesn't owe us anything. If this is the music she wants to release then that's up to her. I'm hopeful of there being some melodic groovy numbers in her upcoming album if it's ever released. I'm just glad she's come out of being a recluse.

I think that since we know she is contractually obligated to put out an album, we are more likely to believe it now.

How dare you insult this art! Wake the f**k up, SISTER! Music is supposed to inspire, this is revolutionary music, do you not read history books? smh ISMs are the reason our people adapted to many self hating images like hair, skin color, religion, and why black folks spend over 500 billion dollars annually, it affects all of us. it's the reason the government is shutdown, Hill is spitting some knowledge, lyrics are supposed to make you want to research the material. You know damn well you don't get all of Nas messages until you listen again or look up some stuff. This track is dope for the simple fact that she used The Slits "Instant Hit" have you ever listened to the lyrics?

I'm not even mad at the message. I was just mourning the absence of a groove, a nice hook(with her singing of course), and I probably would benefit from a few more verbs. lol

Someone on youtube said it was more slam poetry than music. I think I agree with that.
