"It took a lot of guts for her to step up and do that in front of one of the most beloved figures in the Christian faith. While many people find that to be uncouth, I would like to believe that the poor kids and their families are thankful that someone spoke up for them when others wouldn't. She immediately performed this song right after she reprimanded the church. Check out the lyrics posted below and you'll see exactly what she's talking about in the song." mymajesticpage.blogspot.com/2011/09/ode-to-ms-lauryn-hill-damnable-heresies.html#more"...then she went to Rome to sing and tell the Pope about himself..." from Talib Kweli's "Ms. Hill Wow!!! That incident right there is what caused me to have mad respect for Ms. Lauryn Hill. I don't think people really understood the courage it took to do something like that. And her response was, "What I said was the truth. Is telling the truth bad manners? What I asked was the church to repent for what has happened." People can say what they want about Ms. Hill, but that was some kind of awesome. She has my respect FOREVER.

She definitely won me over when she did that.

She has my respect too for this, and thank you for your blog posts - they're very insightful and enjoyable. May I point out a small inaccuracy tho - the Pope was not there that night at the Vatican Concerto di Natale concert, so did not walk out in protest. I know because I was there myself. The speech is correct and was much longer than the quotes, she did indeed go on to sing Social Drugs and Damnable Heresies (parts of which I recorded only on an old mobile phone which I think sickeningly my boyfriend threw out a couple of weeks ago - I could have cried!) I have old photos, though rubbish as I was at the back, and also the concert brochure which said she was scheduled to perform 'Oh happy day' and something else I'd need to dig it out. Anyway, just thought you might like to know. Probably it was some high ranking Cardinal or something that walked out, as there was plenty of that sort there but no Pope! Good lluck and congratulations on your web site - it's great! Love!

Ya know, that's why this site is so important because I found all of that information from researching articles but then you realize that once again, people exaggerated a situation. The articles wrote that The Pope, himself, needed a translation and then walked out in solidarity to their cause. Thank you for setting the record straight. I will try to update the page soon.

@emancip8urself: I think it's fascinating that you were actually at this performance! Do you live in Italy? If you don't mind, can you tell us a little more about that experience? I love reading about first-hand experiences, we get a little more of the truth. Thank you.

yeah no probs, I live in uk but at the time my sister in law lived in Rome, right across the road from the vatican so when I heard she was playing there I asked her to get us tickets. I had read it on a post on the old board (think it was connected to Laurynhill.com but can't remember) and everyone was saying how wierd it was she was gonna play the Vatican considering her views, and speculating about what would go down. As she wasn't touring at the time and nothing in pipeline, I jumped at the chance. I'd never seen her live before. The tickets were really expensive - can't quite remember but over 100Euro, prob about 125 i think each, but I thought I'll never get this chance again and had an inkling myself that she would do something controversial. These tickets were the cheapest by the way and thats why I was near the back, sure they went up to like Euro600ish, so it really was just for the elite. ( Iwas totally out of place ha ha) This concert takes place every year (don't know if still going) and is televised usually on Italian tv. I heard Lauryn's bit was cut that year of course and the footage has never arisen, that I know of. Anyway there are loads of artists on each bill, from around the world, and they all come on and do a couple of songs. We got a programme each and I saw Lauryn's write up said she was gonna sing 'Oh Happy Day' and something else -(I will go and dig it out soon to confirm) it also had a piece about each artist and Lauryn's bit was all about the Miseducation era and a photo from that album. I thought this again was suspect as I had only been listening to Unplugged non-stop since it was released and no mention of this at all in prog. Anyway after artist before Lauryn Hill finished it took ages waiting for her and there seemed to be some commotion behind the scenes, now we know why. Someone came on to apologise for the wait and I can't remember now the reason but it seemed awkward. She finally walked on dressed in black carrying a piece of paper. WHen she got to the podium she started her speech ' I have not come here to celebrate with you....' . Reading from the paper, the words were so powerful, I was shaking. After the speech I started clapping at the same time was applause from others, it wasn't huge applause just polite really but I assume many people didn't speak english or fully understand her message. As far as any jeering or booing - I didn't hear any but maybe there was a t the front and I couldn't hear it. After the speech she picked up her acoustic guitar and sang Social Drugs and Damnable Heresies and walked off with head held high. Wow! Best EUR125 I ever spent!
I went to a side door after her performance to ask if she was there but big security guards say go away. And that was that! I took some pics on a rubbish camera (not digital even) and recorded parts of songs on mobile phone, but can't find it. So upset about that. I'm a total technophobe though - sorry guys!
I've seen her twice since then, London 2005 and Zurich 2007, both times incredible too, but first time was extra special.
love! x

Lauryn Hill ruffling the Vatican's feathers? What’s new? While a lot of people tend to verbally slay sugar knickers for her charlatan and maverick behavior at times. Please believe that she is right for doing that. She is right for speaking with the voice that has being given to her to influence people in a positive way and to chant down Babylon’s evils. She embodies the spirit of what Hip Hop and it’s generation is about. She has shown more courage than most of your favorite rappers out here. I am talking bout rappers who would rather piss in their pants than speak out on this scale. But be the first to speak about how quickly they can peal yo cap back. Be careful Lauryn, I heard that the Black Pope is a bad, bad man. www.splashcru.com/beef.htm
