posted by DAECLECTICMC at runboard... dont know how accurate this story really is but I thought I'd share this with you:
I was introduced to someone who used to work for Columbia's marketing department... As most of you know Columbia is the label Lauryn Hill is signed to... I asked him about Lauryn and her new project and why is it taking so long to be released to the public... Many of us blame Lauryn for this delay but the truth is that the situation is out of her hands... This particlar person told me that he was present when they held a meeting for her album proposal sometime last year... They listened to the whole album and ultimately turned the project down... They told Lauryn that the album was not good enough... The dude told me the album was BRILLIANT but cuz it sounds different than "Miseducation..." the label is afraid it will not sell. They told Lauryn to work on some new songs... Lauryn was very upset and said she did not understand their lack of faith when she sold 8 million albums of "Miseducation..." She mentioned how she will start her own label and release this album and others and not have to humiliate herself asking for approval. So it has been confirmed that Lauryn does have a completed album its just a matter of finding people who have faith in her and this album... The person who told me this assured me the album is a masterpiece and something new and fresh but its not very radio friendly... I suspected for a long time that Columbia was responsible for the delay in this project. They are also responsible for pushing Lauryn to record a reunion album with the Fugees since they refuse to release her solo record... I hope Lauryn starts her own label so we dont have to deal wit Columbia's shyt.

Infact, I have said this repeatedly that Columbia is the one holding her up, but in part, she is to blame. And I also said that the "Walk" song was on that album that was to be released, and since they are refusing, she is now forced to go back into the studio to work on another, more "Mised" type album. So at this point, she does what she does. There were other more "personal" issues behind the reason why Columbia did not release, but I will keep that silent. So now where does that leave her? Answer: Without another solo album released. Unfortunately. Why? Because I dont think she will work on another album for Columbia, and she cant go anywhere else, b/cause she owes too many albums, and they will not release her.

That sounds like it sucks. So no loop holes or any way out?

Like someone said on Laurynet, maybe she's trying to get columbia to pay her to get out of the record label, so she could use their money to start her own. Personally, I think she should join Tuff Gong records.

Thank you sybille for emphasizing my point! But yeah, I think this whole issue is actually the primary cause for Lauryn showing always 2 and half hours late (notice, it's always the 2 and a half hours), and it for her music sounding so "distorted," and also, do you all remember what happend at the Mont Blac event, she refused to speak to the press and do what was agreed on the contract; completely imperialistic and bizzare. It makes perfect sense, becuase, she's proabaly trying to get Columbia fed up with her behavior, so then they would pay her like 20 million dollars to leave, like they did with Mariah Carey back in 2001; Virgina Records paied her 28 million dollars to leave, because she went into that whole ordeal. So with the money she recieves from Columbia, she'll start her own record label, where she can create music freely. But, this is also negative in some aspects for her, because everything she's doing is giving her a bad name. So is she does ever release a new album, she might not get any gigs anymore, because she has such a bad history. Shit, if she ever releases an album (I HOPE AND PRAY TO GOD SHE WILL!) then she will have to do a lot of clarification and justifying for her past behavior. Let's see what the future holds people! Stay positive!

Columbia Record has had so many problems in the past with so many talented artists who have become international idols. They don't give the artists creative freedom to make music. They control you and tie you down and tell you how to make your own music. That was the deal with Alicia Keys who eventually paid her way out and went to J Records. Lauryn could easily do that, cause there are heaps of labels out there that will be willing. But there must be more to it. The fugees signed to Columbia records, but released under Ruffhouse records for both their albums (blunted and score). Wyclef went solo under labels j-records, sony/columbia and koch records. Pras and Lauryn still released their solo records under Ruffhouse. I think this one is complicated, but i would love to see Lauryn begin her own label.

Lauryn's behavior is and has been counter-productive to her cause/fight. You dont do what she has done and maintain respect, credibility and your fan base. She is diggin herself into a very deep ditch, that has now spiralled out of control. No one can rely on her anymore for anything. Ppl will get fed up and eventually they will not check for you anymore. BET and MTV are not pleased with her, to name a few, and those two in themselves are major. Columbia/Sony is the most powerful, and the giant of all giants in record company. She is up for a very tough fight. They do not owe her, she owes them! She needs to suck it up, swallow her pride, play nice..get herself back into the studio and start creating. In truth, she owes that to her fans. She had us waiting long enough. As she said, that last unreleased album was transitional. So now, lets do it!

Damnrohan, I feel what you're saying, but in some aspects, I think that Lauryn is doing what she's doing sometimes, because of the way people act, just like you're acting now. You're saying she owes us something, when in reality she doesn't. She doesn't have to give us music, she does not have to provide us with incredible messages; she's doing it out of the kindness of her heart. She in no way is obligated to do such things. See, you're just situating expectations, something she's tried so hard to liberate herself from.

IF THAT IS THE CASE, You hear that Kweli? BLACKSMITH RECORDS WOULD LOVE TO HAVE HER I BET. Even Jay at Def Jam should get at her. She needs to get out of her deal. Her and the Fugees both.

I'm with you babyjun. She can't let there recording company pin her down from doing what she loves. It would feel terrible to have to do that, but that's what has to be done.

You dont think she wants to give that, or think that we should expect or want that? However way you choose to deal with this "FACT", it still is what it is! Let's NOT kid ourselves! Lauryn is acting the way she is acting for many different reasons. She is a woman HURT! She has been rejected by her record label, for one. There are so many other reasons that I can not go into here. I know alot more about this than you all know, or that I care to share. Ive known about that decision from Columbia the VERY week that they met to discuss her album. Her album was not the only thing that was discussed at that meeting either. Like I said, I know a lot more about this than you all THINK!

;)So since this is going on with her record Company this means No new Album soon ? I mean those new songs she did last year was ok for me and Unplugged was kool too but I would like to at least see another Cd from her ....its a shame when I think about how long Miseducation has been out .......its been 8 years since she had a real Album Out thats sad and when was the last time you seen her in a video ? I would have thought she would have did one with john Legend but that didn't happen..........Now we hear that this is the reason she hasn't come out ....."cuz of her record Company " so this mean where not gonna get a Cd from her no time soon and if she do come back as good as she is and as good as she is It's going to be very hard for her to sell she has lost "alot" of fans I really like her but this is really sad I see no good from this at all

Iono, but I heard from a VERY reliable source that her cd is coming out this year. Why else would she rehearse for a U.S tour ? She problably worked out her issues with Columbia. let's keep our fingers crossed.

I went on myspace recently and looked at Lauryn's website. It said that her record label was 'Major'. She hasn't been on my space since 20/04/2006, so i'm not sure how reliable it is. www.myspace.com/laurynhill
