Wyclef Stands Behind Haitian Civil Warwritten by Rich Rock Thursday - February 26, 2004 Haitian born rapper, Wyclef Jean, is standing behind the opposition fighters in Haiti, saying Haitian President Aristide must step down. The civil unrest and fighting in Haiti is reaching American shores with boatloads of refugees being turned away at borders. Now, rapper Wyclef Jean, an ambassador to Haiti, is supporting the "rebel" fighters and calling for the resignation of Aristide in order to avoid civil war. "I don't consider those people rebels. It's people standing up for their rights," Jean told MTV.com. "It's not like these people just appeared out of nowhere and said, 'Let's cause some trouble.' I think it's just built up frustration, anger, hunger, depression." Wyclef commended Presidential candidate Al Sharpton for his visit to the embattled nation this week and encouraged Americans to become aware of the history of civil unrest in Haiti in Jonathan Demme's documentary "The Agronomist." In related news, Virgin Mobile, has enlisted Wyclef Jean to appear in a television advertising campaign promoting a sweepstakes that will bring lucky Virgin Mobile customers to a hot party for Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights movie. Wyclef appears on the film's soundtrack. >> source: sohh.com
