Just check the FB of Ms Hill and see the controversy between the two sides (pro israeli vs pro palestinians) ... We know that there're real problems with the israeli occupation of palestine for many years! Ms Hill already played there in 2007 ! I didn't check, at that time, what reactions it created .... But now, I just saw that palestinians and people against the colonization of palestine asked Lauryn to boycott, to cancel her concert to show her support to them : "Dear Ms. Lauryn Hill,We urge you to respect the Palestinian call to boycott Israel until it ends its oppression of the Palestinian people and cancel your upcoming performance.By playing in Israel, you will be sending the message to your fans that there is nothing wrong with occupation, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing. In fact the presence of artists like yourself is used routinely by Israel to legitimize its violations of international law and whitewash its denial of Palestinian rights. Just as during the struggle against apartheid in South Africa artists were expected not to cross the picket line and perform in Sun City, artists today are asked to heed the Palestinian call and not lend their name to cover up Israel’s war crimes. Very interesting. I saw the messages too and I wonder what her stance is. In 2007, i thought sue went there as a Christian in the sacred land and also maybe as a way to connect with Israeli people. The zionist idealogy of the government is not necessarily shares by the people in its entirety. Also I have some difficulties to understand the comparison with apartheid. As a former international Law student, I cannot deny the many violation of human rights and international Law in Palestine but the comparison with apartheid is not really accurate although the effects are the same. Apartheid was an official institutional policy that clearly stated "White are superior to Blacks thus. Black people are excluded from any position of power or leadership in this country". Israeli has a more subtle policy, it uses vague religious sources, and invokes security and protection of the Israeli people to oppress Palestinians. I dont think most people worldwide realize whats going on. Medias only relay information about Palestinians suicide bombers. The situation is so complex, most people dont automatically do the comparison with apartheid. Anyway I hope Ms Hill will adress the issue.

I said this the last time she played Israel too, I'm really disappointed in her for it. It is much much more than apartheid, it is not only racial segregation by government policy but continued attacks by the Israeli army, bulldozing houses, shooting children, stealing innocent children from their homes in the night to lock them up, raining down bombs and chemical warfare on a people who cannot escape, on schools and hospitals, cutting off food and water supplies. I realise this is hardly well publicised information, especially in the US, but Ms Hill being as knowledgable, well read and travelled as she is, must understand whats happening. And this makes me very upset and disappointed. I can only assume she thinks the Israeli people need her message as much, if not more, than anyone, which I understand, but if that is her view then she should play in Palestine too. She is supporting genocide playing in Israel and not Palestine. Would she have played South Africa during apartheid? Maybe so if this is her approach. 5 broken cameras is a good documentary I watched the other night, shows a tiny part of what its like for Palestinians day to day. the more I think about this the harder it is to make sense of. I suppose just about everywhere you go in the world, there has been oppression, injustice, murder to different extents. I think of Australia and the genocide of the Aboriginal people, is it acceptable to play there as an artist without speaking out? Of the British Empire and all its atrocities? Of the US and its warmongering?
At the Vatican she spoke out. I understand. She is not playing to the Israeli govt but the people, a very different thing, but still the message it sends is political whether Lauryn Hill sees it that way or not. The comparison to SA during apartheid is so obvious, I dont understand why she would do it.
She lives spiritually and is not confined by political and geographical borders, this is inspiring. Is playing South Africa during apartheid inspiring? Is playing Israel while the genocide is being committed inspiring? Not to me. Its shameful.
If she speaks out about it there, that is different but she didnt last time so.....
Very very very disappointed.

Whenever there is a controversy surrounding her actions or choices she usually releases a statement of some sort (MLH On Racism, Neurotic Society, Her Tax Situation) so she may release a statement clarifying her position on the issue. Time will tell I guess.  |

That's what I mean Jena, why not play for her fans in Palestine too then, as well as Israel? Is that a possiblilty? Can US artists even get into Palestine? I realise there'd be no money in it and if she gets in the way she might get taken out like Rachel Corrie, but if it is a spiritual mission, are the risks not worth it? is there not a higher reward?
So, how would you feel, to learn she would have played SA during apartheid? Surely if her message is without geographical and political borders, she would have played there, no? She cant have it one way and not the other.
I hope you're right PJD4039, and she makes a statement that isnt hypocritical, because as you can probably tell, this is bugging me!

That what I am talking about blind leading the blind both will fall in the ditch. Jesus tell us that God is a Spirit and those that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and truth. Now His word is truth. Yet you quote the bible when needed like Adam lives in theory, I guess that make the bible a lie. Now is that half baked or misleading to those who never read the bible. Did Eve get turn out one day and think she is bisexual. The bible never states this; yet you sing as though it's the gospel and now you are going to help your black people. Race has always been the dividing line and that is not of God but the devil. How long will thou paint those lies within thee Oh Jerusalem!
