Khal: Much respect to you on getting a 2xCD “Best of Lauryn Hill” mixtape out to the masses! How do you hook up with people like Lauryn Hill? Was it difficult to get in touch with her, and then how much harder was it to get her to host the tape!?!
J Period: You know, I would love to think it’s karma—you get back what you put in the world—like if I do things for the right reasons and I will be repaid for that philosophy. But in reality, it equal parts luck, skill, passion… and stubborn persistence. A lot of cats say “No” along the way, you just have to be prepared to either keep it moving or dig in and try another route. I will say this: because I love what I do, I think that comes across when you talk to me, when you see me spin, and when you hear one of my mixtapes, and I think most artists can identify that—who’s doing it for the right reasons—and I think a lot of doors have opened to me for that reason. As far as Ms. Hill specifically, the connect came about through Rohan Marley, who I became friends with last year while on tour. He had heard my CDs and liked them, and I told him about the idea for the tape early on. Eventually, he decided to give me her email address and that’s how my conversation began with her. After that, it took some time writing back and forth before I felt like she warmed up to the idea. Then I met up with her in person at the Def Poetry taping, and recorded the drops for the CD. I think the most significant thing for her was: What is my motivation? Why am I doing this? And when she saw that I was doing this for the love of her music, straight up, she agreed to cosign it.
