THE FUGEES - reunited - at BET Awards!!! Fugees End Fued At BET AwardsHOLLYWOOD — The reunited Fugees gave a surprise performance, Destiny's Child gave surprise lap dances and BET gave some, well, not-so-surprising awards on Tuesday at the fifth-annual BET Awards. As has become an award-show ritual over the last 12 months, Kanye West was the top winner, taking home Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and Video of the Year for his "Jesus Walks." West, like Best Male R&B Artist winner Usher, Best Actor winner Jamie Foxx and six other victors, was not in attendance at the Kodak Theatre, shifting the focus off the awards and on to the show's performances. Fugees kicked off the show with an unannounced medley of "Ready or Not," "Fu-Gee-La" and "Killing Me Softly," signaling that the once-feuding group had settled their differences. "We've been in the studio," Pras said before the show. "We're trying to figure out how we gonna do it." [...] source: www.mtv.com/news/articles/1504910/20050629/destinys_child.jhtml?headlines=true------------------------------------------------------------------------ Performances Steal BET Awards SpotlightBy RYAN PEARSON, Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES -- Stevie Wonder showed off his dance moves, Will Smith arrived in a horse-drawn carriage and The Fugees got together again. Extravagant performances and on-stage antics largely stole the spotlight from the winners at Tuesday night's BET Awards -- if the winners showed up at all, that is. Among the eight no-shows was top honoree Kanye West, who earned trophies for male hip-hop artist and video of the year for his "Jesus Walks." West's discovery, piano man John Legend, picked up his trophy for new artist and performed "Ordinary People" and "My Cherie Amour" with Wonder, who later danced while singing his new single, "So What The Fuss." Soul diva Alicia Keys hoisted her award for female R&B artist toward the audience and declared: "This is for all my people who are really trying to dream big dreams." Others who did show included soon-to-disband Destiny's Child, named best group, and 19-year-old Atlanta singer Ciara, the leading nominee who won for her dance collaboration with Missy Elliott on "1, 2 Step." The show kicked off with a surprise reunion of The Fugees, who haven't recorded an album together since 1996's "The Score" and haven't even been on speaking terms in recent years.
"If you want another Fugee album, let me see your hands in the air right now," Wyclef Jean said after climbing into the crowd. The group performed "Ready Or Not" and put a reggae twist on "Fu-Gee-La."
Lauryn Hill, who had largely dropped out of public view since her 2002 live album, sounded weak at first, saying at one point, "We got a little overzealous in rehearsal." Her voice returned in time for a rendition of "Killing Me Softly With His Song."
Backstage, third member Pras said the group was in the studio and hoped to release an album next year. The Fugees split after "egos got real big," he said, adding that there were "a lot of wounds ... getting healed right now." source: www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/wire/ats-ap_top18jun29,1,3738227.story?coll=la-ap-topnews-headlines ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Fugees singen bei BET Awards Mit dem Auftritt scheint die Wiedervereinigung besiegelt.

as far as I know: THE NATION OF ISLAM is a religious movement in the usa (new york) connected, of course, to the ISLAM and believing in ALLAH. Especially the black, urban community - at least those who convert to become a moslem - are its members. Minister Farrakhan is something like a leader of this religious group. Not only do they connect to islam but there are also strong references to 20th century african-american history with references to malcolm X and martin luther king jr. the fugees were often referring directly or indirectly to the nation of islam and minister farrakhan. though it is unclear how close they were/are connected. also lauryn hill referred to Frarrkhan on her Unplugged 2.0 rapping: "where there is no remission there cant be no repentence - and that sentence more serious than Vietnam, the atom bomb and Saddam and... Minister Farrakhan" BUTlauryn hill stated in numerous occassions that she is not a follower of a religious group (not rastafarian, not jewish, christian, muslim) BUT A FOLLOWER OF JESUSmore information on THE NATION OF ISLAM incl. some REALLY interesting columns and essays by the Honorable MINISTER FARRAKHAN can be found under www.noi.orgpeace!

Fugees To Reunite In The Studio Once Hill Finishes Solo LP - 10.27.2004 Hip-hop fans may receive a Christmas miracle a little ahead of schedule. The Fugees are back in the studio recording ... sort of.
Wyclef and Pras, two-thirds of the Grammy-winning group, recently reunited to remix Wyclef’s cover of Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba." The song, which also features Beenie Man, is the latest offering from Clef’s recently released Welcome to Haiti: Creole 101.
According to a representative for Wyclef, he, Pras and Lauryn Hill will enter the studio together once Hill finishes her equally anticipated solo album, due next year.
This isn't the first time members of the group have gotten together since their split. The whole trio reunited on September 18 at Dave Chappelle’s block party (see "Fugees — Yes, Even Lauryn — Reunite For Dave Chappelle's Block Party"). While Wyclef has been hesitant to call that outing an "official" reunion, all signs point to one in the near future.

Review: Erykah Badu's `New Amerykah'
By BRETT JOHNSON, For The Associated Press

Erykah Badu, "New Amerykah: Part One (4th World War)" (Universal/Motown)
On her fourth studio album, "New Amerykah: Part One (4th World War)," Erykah Badu moves even further away from the neo-soul conventions she helped usher in more than a decade ago.
Instead of re-treading the simple melodies and succinct, pop song structures from her 1997 debut, "Baduizm," she has mined an increasingly looser approach with each subsequent release. "Mama's Gun" (2000) ends with a 10-minute suite, and "Worldwide Underground" (2003) is a moody, 50-minute EP full of rambling grooves and hazy lyrics.
More than ever though, Badu challenges fans to keep up with her creative impulses. Those who do will be richly rewarded for their effort. The CD is more daring than the album's current single, "Honey." Hidden as the disc's closing bonus track, it's almost an anomaly given the preceding material.
Dark, mesmerizing head-nodders largely produced by hip-hop eccentrics Madlib and Shafiq Husayn and Taz Arnold of Sa-Ra Creative Partners dominate "New Amerykah." Incantatory chants, esoteric spoken-word rants and Badu's quirky vocals — whether achy blues or mumbled coos — add to the funky jumble.
Indeed, it's a brilliant mess where songs often switch tempo midstream then settle back on-track. Yet the disc is also where Badu's lefty socio-politics ("The Cell"), messages of self-acceptance ("Me") and the power of perseverance ("Soldier") reveal an artist willing to share herself as the unfinished article. On the hypnotic "Master Teacher," she confesses: "See, I've been in search of myself/ for it's just too hard for me to find ... cause I'm in the search of something new." This effort is certainly a huge step in the right direction.

My favourite CD at the moment - VERY funky CD! PLEASE pick this one up!!! Mark RonsonVersionColumbia; 2007 www.markronson.co.ukLoose, funky, and soaked in soul, Version is not only Mark Ronson's best release yet, it is perhaps the best release of the year. Devoid of amusing adaptations and with tongue-in-cheek remixes nowhere in sight, Version is hardly Ronson getting his Weird Al on, but it's not a stuffy and serious selection of songs, either. It's just one of the world's best DJs getting busy - wiping the dust off, mixing things up, and reintroducing us to some old (and new) favorites. Fortunately for fans, familiarity with the originals (or lack thereof) isn’t necessarily important in appreciating what Ronson and crew have in store. I’ve never heard “Valerie” before (a song originally by UK indie rockers the Zutons,) but Amy Winehouse turns their psychedlic ballad into an addictive modern Motown romp with her voluminous vocals set over a rolling bassline and big-band brass. I can’t say I grew up with The Smiths, either, but Ronson mates their classic “Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One Before” with The Supreme’s “You Just Keep Me Hangin’ On” and births what is easily Version’s Stax-styled magnum opus. Not recognizing any of the names responsible for the OG tracks so far? No worries. Ronson has persons plugged into the top-40 in mind, too. He is a DJ, remember? He turns Coldplay’s “God Put a Smile On Your Face” upside down, ditching piano chords for an incredibly funky drummer and swapping Chris Martin’s soft side for The Daptone Horns’ blaring trumpets, and he reworks Britney Spears’ whirling middle-school dance anthem “Toxic” into a slinky, velvety, burlesque track complete with ODB interjections thrown in for comic relief and good measure. Version is a wonderful example of Ronson’s production work, but in the end his inner-DJ is what shines through. His refunkdafied renditions of Radiohead’s “Just” and the Charlatan’s “The Only One I Know” are sure to catch veteran listeners’ ears, but they’re delightful and digestable enough for people thinking these songs are brand new, too. With Version, Ronson isn’t just playing a collection of other people’s songs, he’s making his own. And if a DJ by breed is a not just a record player, but a record creator, Ronson is best in breed. - Mike Gadd www.markronson.co.uk

Amy Winehouse is now an OKAYPLAYER artist! www.okayplayer.comA lot of the criticism in the uk towards joss stone has to do with her trying to be all american. They say she is fake, talking with a faked l.a. accent and just behaving alltogether like she is the best since sliced-bread. However, the criticism is not really about her talent and her new album. Mostly they all agree that she is incredible talented (with that voice!) and that the album is GREAT. I can only agree. I have the record "Introducing Joss Stone" since yesterday and I already love it. As for Amy Winehouse, yes, she has her problems on display and is very honest about them. What is wrong with that? You prefer all those fake artists who are in denial about their (drug)-problems? But I agree, amercian society in general will have lots of problems with her persona. So she wont become americas sweetheart, of course. However, I think she will sell a respectable amount of units. All of the okayplayer family loves her! peace!

REVIEWS:
There are two clear traditions of ‘diva’ in soul music. On one side there’s Diana Ross – and her natural heir, Beyonce – all immaculate polish and surface. And on the other there are the likes of Etta James – a woman whose music reeks of desire and emotion. It’s to this ‘Dark Soul’ tradition that Amy Winehouse aspires - she’s certainly got the voice for it.
And the music. The much praised opening track, “Rehab”, comes across like an obscure northern soul gem, riddled with pathos and melodrama. In fact none of the music here sounds like it was made after 1967.
Much of the rest of this pleasingly short album - eleven three-minute or so tracks – goes on to explore the joyful misery of being young, messy and in love/lust. And Amy doesn’t paint a particularly pretty picture of herself; she plays the cuckold on “Just Friends”, and gets caught out by her ‘lickle carpet burns’ on the fabulous “I’m No Good”.
But hey, she suffers for her sins. The title track, owing much to the sonic heritage of Phil Spector and Scott Walker, is a tortured monster of a track - Amy displaying the sort of vocal depth that Marc Almond has always dreamed of.
The second half of the album isn’t quite as good as the first, but that’s a minor gripe. One of the best UK albums of the year, with the added advantage that you'll be able to pick it up at the local supermarket checkout...

JACK B
This album, puts Amy back on top after a long awaited return of three years. The album is in itself a magnificent attempt to dominate the charts. The title track stands out mainly due to its simplicity and soul. The emotion pours throughout the duration of the album and is clearly evident of Amy's skills as a singer. Not as entertaining perhaps as her debut album Frank, but definately shows a more grown, hurt and perhaps tamed Amy. Sameena Ahmed, Leeds
Best Album in 2006 What a Voice! Mike Kroon Amsterdam
A British talent to be proud of...makes up for the embarassing success of Joss Stone. Julie, Oldham.
