Wyclef Jean hasn't released a record in years, but the gifted musician best known for his hook-laden record "The Carnival" is hardly forgotten. He has a knack for keeping himself in the spotlight.
He guest-stars: We just spotted him in the bubble with MTV's uber-annoying "band in a bubble," Cartel, working on a track. He got Shakira's hips doing scandalous things for their enormously popular "Hips Don't Lie." He hobnobs with politicos: Was that him dancing with Nancy Pelosi at her swearing-in?
Tuesday, he will actually find himself on a stage again, hopefully playing "Guantanamera" to a crowd of cooing families. The former Fugee will be the headliner at the Metro World Music blowout at the Kennedy Center. Also on the bill: reggae artist Shaggy, ska outfit the Skatalites and Afro-fusion group Plunky and Oneness.
The island-themed concert, timed to coincide with the Conference on the Caribbean (a gathering in Washington aimed at strengthening U.S. relations with the region), came about after the meeting's organizers approached the Kennedy Center. Ambassadors offered input on which artists they'd like to see perform, and wouldn't you know it that Wyclef's political connections again came into play.
Haitian Ambassador Raymond A. Joseph tossed Wyclef's name into the hat, and Wyclef, of course, agreed, Joseph being his uncle and all.
Bring lawn chairs and blankets but don't worry about the wallet, because the show is free.
5 p.m.-9 p.m. South Plaza Stage, 2700 F St. NW. (In case of rain, the music will move inside to the Grand Foyer.) 202-467-4600.
