YÉLE HAITI
Yéle Haiti is a new non-political movement founded by musician and producer Wyclef Jean to provide both resources and inspiration to help change the country. Projects are designed to make a difference in the fields of education, health, environment and community development. The power and reach of music, sports and the media is used to increase the impact of these projects.
Projects include:
- Primary School Scholarships: providing 6,950 scholarships for primary school children in Port-au-Prince, Gonaives
- School Rebuilding: repairing and upgrading 20 schools in the Gonaives
area that were damaged by tropical storm Jeanne in 2004 (partial funding from USAID).
- Teacher Training: conducting onsite workshops to improve teaching
methods (including ‘active learning’ techniques) in 16 schools each in Gonaives and Port-au-Prince.
- L’Athlétique d’Haiti: providing core funding for an after-school soccer program
for 650 youth from the Cité Soleil and Bel Air sections of Port-au-Prince.
- Computer Lab: installing computers in a high school in Croix-des-Bouquets.
University Scholarships: funding 10 university scholarships for poverty
stricken but top ranking students to develop Haiti’s professional class.
- Food Distribution: regular distribution of free food from the World Food Programme
feeding 8,000 people a month in Cité Soleil, Bel Air and other slums.
- Pwojè Lari Pwòp: managing the public awareness campaign for a USAID funded project run by the Pan American Development Foundation, employing 2,500 people a day to clean the streets of Port-au-Prince.
- Concours Rap Pwojè Lari Pwòp: a contest where youth from the slums wrote rap songs on themes of cleaning up the environment; the final competition was televised in June, 2006.
- Child Soldier Rehabilitation: providing education, vocational training and counseling for imprisoned child gang members to prevent them from becoming hardened criminals when released.
Hip Hop An Sante: hip hop musicians performing as part of a monthly concert series promoting HIV/AIDS awareness to rural youth.
- École Verte: bringing students to the mountains of Seguin for environmental
education camping trips and tree planting.
- Yéle Cinema: projecting Creole-dubbed films at outdoor locations in Cité Soleil, Bel Air and other slum areas without electricity.
