Her single "Hips Don't Lie" with Wyclef Jean explores the fusion of pop and reggaeton( ).
But here's something most people don't know: The single holds the record for the most-played song in pop music history, according to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems.
We're taking about Shakira, Shakira. (Her birth name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll).
The Colombian pop singer and songwriter of Lebanese descent will fuel her Oral Fixation tour with signature belly dance moves for her first-ever show in Corpus Christi on Wednesday at American Bank Center arena.
A word to the wise: If you haven't purchased tickets, you'd better hurry.
"It's getting close to selling out," said Marc Solis, American Bank Center general manager. The show's capacity is 8,700 seats, he added.
Shakira launched English and Spanish albums in the same year: "Fijacion Oral Vol. 1" and "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" debuted in the top 5 of the Billboard Top 200 Album chart in 2005.
Originally, Corpus Christi wasn't a stop for Shakira's tour, Solis said.
"This is an artist that normally people would have to drive out of town to go see," he said.
Latin rhythms, alt-rock and electronic dance music, Solis says the "mega superstar" blazes through different genres.
For "Oral Fixation Vol. 2," Shakira not only collaborated with hip-hop singer Wyclef Jean, she teamed up with Spanish pop star Alejandro Sanz for "La Tortura," which remained at No. 1 for 20 weeks on U.S. Latin charts.
Carlos Santana shows off his guitar work on the single "Illegal" and she paired up with Gustavo Cerati of Argentinean rock band Soda Stereo for "The Day and the Time," "Dia Especial" on the Spanish-language album.
Shakira, who began writing songs at age 8, speaks Spanish, Portuguese and English. The UNICEF Ambassador penned all the lyrics for both "Fijacion Oral Vol. 1" and "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" and has sold more than 30 million albums.
The New York Times cites Shakira as pop's 21st-century Latina bombshell.
"Her videos and songs continue to be hits," Solis said. "She's a pop icon and a Latin diva."
