reigns as one of the worlds most sought after artists and producers yet he has offered up his fame to rescue many starving and forgotten people of Haiti. Within one year Jean’s organization, Yéle Haiti, has infiltrated violent areas of Haiti that agencies have not been able to reach in order to supply food, clean toxic streets, and provide scholarships for students to attend school. So howdid he do this in one year? One beat at a time. As a result, the monthly publication, Positive People has named Jean its “Positive Person of the Year.” Positive Magazine is a monthly publication featuring Positive People, Places, Ideas, and Things To Do. Each month Positive Magazine selects a positive person and destination. The publication is targeted to professionals who desire to stay current on world and local affairs as well aslatest travel, business, and technology trends. Distributed worldwide via print and is also available for viewing online at: www.PositiveMag.com.
Jean, who first came to attention in the music world as a member of the renowned supergroup the Fugees, uss his influence as a renowned musician to calm the gangs and mobilize the community. Born in Haiti, he spent most of his life growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y., but never lost sight of his national roots. His social activism has not been limited to Haiti, however, as Jean has used his stature in the entertainment world to fuel discussions about world problems, including the wars that devastate the planet. Those themes often show up in his work, which he said gives him an opportunity to bring knowledge and hope to young people.
“Music is the universal unifier... When I look in the eyes of the young kids I see hope and confidence; I’m inspired to keep working,” he explained.
Yéle Haiti’s accomplishments included:
Feeding hundreds of thousands of Haitians in the hard to reach areas;
Providing scholarships to 3,600 children (Haiti schools are tuition based);
Renovating and rebuilding 20 schools;
Funding workshops to train teachers to stop using the whip on the students;
Employing more than 1,400 workers to clean garbage laden and toxic streets; and
Developing channels to getting clean water to residents.
