A food distribution project supported by US rapper Wyclef Jean erupted in violent scenes in a Haitian slum area. The trouble broke out as the food aid was given out in the volatile Cite Soleil area on Monday. Haitian-born Jean's charity Yele Haiti joined forces with the World Food Programme to try to bring aid to two troubled shantytowns in Port-au-Prince. Despite the chaos, organisers said they were pleased with the outcome and said the desperation proved help was needed. The distribution began in a festive atmosphere, with Haitian music stars dancing with local people, but fights later began over the food. Aid agencies have been reluctant to go into the two shantytowns due to security concerns. Wyclef Jean is frontman with The Fugees and in the last few years Jean has branched into acting, with roles in the US TV series Third Watch and independent films One Last Thing and Dirty.
