As am I. The people writing these articles really are the ones who sound prejudice. Why does a girl-man have to be affiliated with a gay man? To me, a girl man is someone who acts cowardly, and does not face up to reality. She doesn't even say anything insulting towards the drag queens. It's just another way to get bad media behind her. Out all that she says in this 1000 word song, this is what they pick the hell out? Knock it off. This is what is annoying about social movements at times. There are always a few bad apples who plunge towards extremity making the rest of the movement look overly sensitive and quite ridiculous.

So am I and I don't belive she is. They are just making her out to be bad and have nothing better to do. How can they take a few words from a song and say she is? There is worthy news out there to write about.

I'm french and honestly, i'm tired of the behaviour of gay associations. They are like ideological policy: it's impossible to say something finely-shaded about homosexuals and gays. If you do this, you will be, always, homophobic. With debates about "mariage for all" (mariagelegal for homosexual) in France, there were some accusations and declarations ridiculous against people opposed to gay mariage: no shades, there were ALL homophic. And i will not talk about the insults of homosexuals associations against Church. They make no shades: you talk about gay, you are homophobic. Final point, nothing to add.
Of course, Lauryn Hill is not homophobic. But thanks to their, it's a form of promotion for Lauryn new song.

From her tumblr page
Neurotic Society is a song about people not being, or not being able to be, who and what they truly are, due to the current social construct. I am not targeting any particular group of people, but rather targeting everyone in our society who hides behind neurotic behavior, rather than deal with it. The world we live in now is, in many ways, an abhorrent distortion, an accumulation of generations and generations of response to negative stimuli. Many don’t even have a concept of what normal is, by virtue of having lived afraid, ashamed, as victims of abuse, or inadequately handled for so long. I believe in coming up from under that fear and allowing the psyche/soul to truly heal. I understand that healing is a process, but I also believe that it is our responsibility to seriously care for ourselves, so that we can extend that level of concern for others and positively affect our environment. I want what is best for Humanity. Humanity, aligned with the Spiritual principles, that help each individual conquer fear, and transcend limited circumstance. I believe in healing and dealing with the traumatizing events of our lives, both in this lifetime, as well as those passed down to us, or inherited, so we can live as fully as possible. The whole world suffers from a lack of honest dialogue. Character and integrity have suffered at the hands of political correctness and corporate agenda, while our society moves further and further towards unhealthiness and breakdown. I oppose these trends. Everyone has a right to their own beliefs. Although I do not necessarily agree with what everyone says or does, I do believe in everyone’s right to protest. The overarching message of my music is to get up and stop compromising! And hopefully it will stimulate and motivate the changes that our society needs. Artists are constantly under media and public scrutiny. This is not a one-way street. Those of us with the charge of putting out faithful vibrations, have a responsibility to report what we see, and to write about what we know. I have seen some of the best and also some of the worst representations of human behavior. The same way that I exalt that which is high, is the same way I expose that which is abusive, in order to motivate and remind if not all of us, than as many as possible, of the Higher Calling.

It’s funny how all the lyrics in the song fade away, and this one part stands out..Perhaps some have their heart’s set on vilifying Ms. Hill as if she is the cause of the problem, funny how we condemn people who speak the truth and praise those who lie to our face…Perhaps many of you are misinterpreting the message, perhaps in 10 years you may get it or not. “Quick scamming drag queens”…Perhaps she was referring to men and women who dress up in sheep’s clothing, then when your back is turned they stab you in it and steal your wallet. Maybe, just maybe when she said “girl men” she was referring to cowardly men, men who talk behind your back and don’t say shit to your face. I’m a gay black man and I don’t, nor will I ever identify myself as being a “girl man”.(You answer to what you are) Perhaps when we are reading and listening to Ms. Hill’s art work, we should look at the content from different perspectives, form several different thoughts, and you choose for yourself which one you’re willing and able to digest.
God Bless all of you!

"The whole world suffers from a lack of honest dialogue."I agree, so address the specific words in question, Ms. Hill...

So the gay community can try to twist them? No. She said what she needed to say. The words are there.

Perhaps you are correct, Cherry. I believe, however, that since Ms. Hill decided to respond to the gay community--because she didn't have to--she should have addressed the specific lyrics they had issues with, "girl men," "social transvestism," and "drag queens." And not for the purpose of apologizing or acquiescing to political correctness, but for the purpose of taking ownership of the words she wrote and putting them in their proper context. I wanted to know what she meant, but she used skillful verbiage to skirt around the issue, and, to me, that's not honest dialogue.

Just thinking about the 'Adam lives in Theory' lyrics about Eve and how it might help people to figure out how Lauryn feels about homosexuals, if they care. For what it's worth, I don't think she has anything but love for anyone.
"Eve was so naive, blinded by the pride and greed Wanting to be intellectual Drifting from the way she got turned down one day And now she thinks that she's bisexual"
I think it's more of a nature/nurture debate rather than does she love/hate gays. It's not politically correct if she says she believes homosexuals are a product of their environment, but that's my take on what she's saying. I'm probably wrong but just saying what I hear from her lyrics in this song. And I agree in the Neurotic Society' Song I don't get any inference that she's slagging gays, just using metaphors.
maybe the 'adam lives in theory' lyric is a metaphor too, me na know.
Love! x
