nice performing in nederland limburg landgraaf pinkpop 1999 The band looked so HAPPY to be there, as well as Lauryn. I don't know if anyone will be able to understand this or see it this way, but there was something about Lauryn circa 98' - 99' that felt more genuine. That may sound strange since according to Ms. Hill, she wasn't happy during this period of her life, but was pretending to be. But I truly believe she thoroughly enjoyed working that stage and doing her thing like a boss lady she was/is. The back-up singers (Lanesha Randolph, Tara, Candace) were obviously excited and singing the songs like it was their own, and even her band was pumped. In many of her recent performances, I don't feel this same energy. Lauryn sometimes has this 'look' to her, and I use that word so loosely because I can't exactly pinpoint what it is. This 'look like she wants to pour her heart out and fully connect with her fans, but is hesitant to. Like, "I'm the artist. And you paid money to hear me. Nothing more, nothing less." I feel like she's been on the defensive ever since her tour started in December. THOUGH, there are moments when she isn't like this, and seems very happy to be with her fans, sometimes. She barely smiles on stage now, and is so hard on her band I don't think I've ever seen them smile either. Look at this video, where she was naming her band members and giving them props, and cracking jokes with them in front of the audience: Will she ever be this happy and open again?

I gotta disagree...Ive seen Lauryn live about 4 times...and TRUST ME her band smiles...when they did the Homecoming at UM in Miami they were getting blunted on stage having a GREAT time...Lauryn was in the back doing what she does lol and when she came out she/they killed it. I get what you thought with the "hesitant" look. But I think that stems from her being wise and being in the game SO LONG she knows malicious hearts and thought hide behind smiles (Just listen to Loose Myself)...But everytime I see her she's enjoying herself on stage...each song is an emotion...she doesnt have to necessarily smile thru the entire song while singing it like some performers...that looks crazy lol...but yeah she's the shit...she's methodical, NOTHING she does or presents to the public is without reason

I believe that Lauryn is doing just fine. I never really bought into the, "she's not smiling, therefore she must not be happy."

Like I said, there are definitely moments/shows when Lauryn's ENERGY and attitude is open and vibrant, and reminiscent of the Lauryn on Pinkpop, but overall, I haven't seen that level of energy like she had at Pinkpop, or at least, not very often. In many of her old performances, she had a great connection with her audience (and there's nothing wrong with that), and her spirit seemed more liberated and at ease. I hope this doesn't come across as throwing shade at Lauryn's current showmanship, because that's not what I'm trying to do at all. Seeing this old video just made me miss this amazing grace and vibe she seemed to bring to all her shows. And personally, I believe that's the essence of an MC. Not the lyrics, or the punchlines, or metaphors, but the raw spirit he or she delivers with the crowd.
