Recently discovered this thread discussing the first 3 shows that Lauryn's had. The ignorance of some the people commenting is shocking. Some of them are straight up haters!! www.lipstickalley.com/f15/lauryn-hill-getting-bad-reviews-273048/index7.htmlI will say that Lauryn being late for every show and rushing the set is not a good look especially for people paying that much to see her. It just plays to the rumours of her being unreliable and unprofessional. She still gives a decent show though. Looks like L will need a major PR campaign before her album release to keep these haters at bay Anyway I am praying that Lauryn has a good tour and that she shows up on time :-)

ah well... maybe I'm too much of a fan, but the whole discussion seems pretty much shallow. The lowest part was reading about her eyebrows and makeup. lol. I dont understand why she's being late for every single concert for last 5 years. and like, drastic late. I don't really understand it and cant and wont justify that. that's just not fair to the people. people's time need to be appreciated. And what's wrong about her new arrangements? I really like em! Zion is my favorite! I guess it is in our blood to reminisce about old days. but i'm not the same person as 5 years ago, how can I expect lauryn to be the same? and i hate when I see someone commentin that she's doing this for the money! she's not! it's all about passion and music, i can see it in her performance, she's waving hands, legs, running all over the stage, giving instructions to her band mates. she's giving all of her. she even brings out her children. I dont think people will ever stop supporting lauryn. and i aint talking about hardcore fans like us that know her every step

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though. I believe all the answers to their questions are in the albums she made. That's the truth, and i always believe that Lauryn has had to deal with a lot of criticism in the past, so haters won't affect her at all.

Well, we're all aware that people are going to be upset because she isn't performing the songs the way it sounds on the CD. All her real fans, by now, would realize that she hasn't performed songs like "Lost Ones" the way it was recorded since she released the album. Every other time has been a remixed version. She wants to stay fresh. I understand it and welcome it. I would rather see her freely express herself than perform a bland version just so I can sing along. I walk away with much more when I see performances like her New Haven version of "Zion" or "Ex-Factor."
As for her tardiness, that's another story. I don't understand it and I don't think I ever will. There's no excuse. If the show starts at 9 then you should be in the wings at 8:58 ready to run on. If you only have a 90 minute show then get yourself an opening act. You can't expect everyone to constantly wait for you no matter how wonderful you are. I can get past the comments about her music but I can't help but understand their anger towards her disregard for people's time and money.

She wasn't late to any of the Raggamuffin concerts she did in January February in New Zealand and Australia, She never kept the crowd waiting, But that may have had something to do with NewZealand and Australian attitudes of leaving the Diva antics at the door, your on at this time so you will be on at this time.

She's rarely late if she's playing festivals (apart from the last rock the bells show). It's usually when she headlines that it happens.

Some of the reviews say how dissapointed they were with the performance. If they had been following Lauryn as real fans they should have known what to expect and not the Lauryn of 15 years ago. These recent shows have been quite good compared to the one I went to in 2007 - she's smiling, singing at times and engaging with her audience. When I saw her in 2007 I knew she was going to be late and how she was going to sound but I still enjoyed it.

Even if she shows up 10 hours late, or never ever performs again, I will always have unconditional love for Lauryn. To be honest, this whole comeback trail and tour gig is not even nececcary. Lauryn hill is a certified legend who will be remembered for years and years to come. Just watch B.E.T's My Mic Sounds Nice; the entire documentary was basically about Lauryn, and they spoke about her like she was the Goddess of hip-hop. Anything she does now will be simply to express herself and please her fans, nothing else. She doesn't have to make some epic comeback or be the second coming of music's Christ, because she's done it ALL. I don't expect Lauryn to duplicate the success of her Miseducation days because that would be simply unrealistic. When she made that album, she didn't hit a home-run, she made a grand-slam. Lauryn made history! And any follower of history knows that nothing happens the same exact way twice. It's against the law of physics. People need to let go of this pre-conceived image they have of 1998 Lauryn twirling her dreadlocks in 2010. Lauryn never asked for or co-signed the larger-than-life comeback people want her to make, so why should we expect her to make it?

I just found the most amazing article from sometime in the past where she did a very personal interview explaining all the stuff that people questioned. I never heard about this interview. It's amazing to read. She said that she liked Beyonce's voice when she heard her in a Destiny's Child song. She explains her problems with The Fugees. people's expectations of her and her disdain with the current state of Hip Hop (at the time of the interview). It's like you could apply this to this very day. Some people will find her to be too cocky and too regal when they read this BUT she addresses that as well. LOL. Kanye also said something about people who shouldn't speak on their greatness. I agree with him. Why the hell can we not say that Beyonce could surpass the legendary status of Tina Turner? Who are we to say that people can't be great? Interesting read. www.assatashakur.org/forum/conscious-music-artists-news-views/9432-prophet-lauryn-hill-interview.html

That interview was from Trace magazine 2005. It was very interesting. Hope she does a cover story again in 2011.

A recent Wall Street Journal article: Tardiness also plagued Ms. Hill's festival appearances last summer. Now, out on her own, Ms. Hill is testing fan loyalty with relatively high prices. Her $60 ticket was the steepest in Higher Ground's 12-year history, according to a representative of the club, who said a handful of refunds were issued to ticket holders who left before Ms. Hill went on. "No one thing will kill the love her fans have for her, but a thousand little ones will," said Jeff Rabhan, an artist manager and chair of New York University's Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music. "People have put their hope in some sort of grandiose comeback, which I'm not sure she's capable of meeting." The singer, who has rarely broken her silence in the press, declined an interview request through Mr. Schwartz. He said he's hesitant to speak on her behalf, but insists she's "misunderstood." As for fan expectations, burnished by nostalgia and years of anticipation, he said, "It's not her responsibility to live up to this personification of people's ideas. She didn't ask for that. She's just her own person doing her own thing."I think as real fans we all agree with Chris Schwartz (long time manager of Lauryn). It is those psuedo-Lauryn fans who haven't followed her career and still long for the 23 yr old Lboogie of 98.
