Claudette Ortiz from City High:
why we like her?
It's hard to resist a beautiful woman who can speak Spanish, even harder when she can sing and play guitar. Since the video for "Caramel," we can't stop fantasizing about her serenading us in Spanish.
Why is she famous?
Claudette Ortiz is the breathy, velvety female voice of the hip-hop/R&B trio City High, who made their debut on the charts with the single "What Would You Do" off their self-titled album. Claudette was barely seen in that first video, but the group's second video for "Caramel" showcases her throughout.
It's hard not to fall in love with a woman who publicly declares her affinity for watching boxing matches and football games. In fact, she could look like major leaguer Ramon Ortiz and most of us would still fall for her.
But there is still so much more to this New Jersey native than a love of sports. She has the prettiest face in music since Vanessa Williams; in fact, her eyes are probably the only pair that would stand a chance against those of the venerable Miss Williams. Claudette is also blessed with a body that most models and actresses wish for. She is one of the sexiest musicians to show up on MTV in a very long time.
Claudette also plans to stay on MTV for a long time; after all she's only twenty years old. To get some perspective on that age, remember that she is practically the same age as Britney Spears and almost all of the other female pop stars. But unlike her diva compatriots, she has a style and grace that makes her seem much older than her years. Also unlike those two blonde popsters, Claudette has a tendency to make music that is well received by both critics and fans.
Her debut album as a member of the group City High has been a massive success while garnering rave reviews from almost every media outlet.
Unfortunately for us, Claudette is so new to stardom that no one has been able to get an accurate read on her personality. What has emerged during her brief time in the spotlight is a caring, respectful and mature individual that has won the hearts of journalists and fellow musicians.
With regards to talent, we have seen what she has to offer: she has a phenomenal singing ability, is bilingual (English and Spanish), and can play the guitar. Because of her wide range of talents, most critics are predicting that Claudette is getting ready to enter the elite class of female R&B singer/songwriters.
To get an idea of how sexy Claudette is, just give a listen to the Spanish verse she sings on the song "Caramel." The language combined with her sexy vocals is enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
Based on her voice alone, Claudette is one of the sexiest women in the world. But what cements her status as R&B's newest sex symbol, are her beautiful eyes, soft, perfect face, and flawless body.
Since she's only twenty years old, it is hard to say that she has accomplished an awful lot. What she has done is score a hit album with her group that has so far spawned two Top Ten singles, and established herself as the hottest duet partner since Frank Sinatra.
She has already collaborated with Wyclef Jean on "Two Wrongs (Don't Make a Right)" and is proving to be one of the most sought after female collaborators in the hip-hop/R&B scene. She is a solid bet to become a real star, but fame will have to wait a little longer because now she is mostly referred to only as "City High Girl." That, of course, will change soon enough.
R&B being dominated by beautiful yet intimidating divas like Mary J. Blige and Whitney Houston, Claudette stands out like a sore thumb -- in a good way. She has a face that could melt hearts, and eyes that will make you smile whether you want to or not. Just glance at a collection of photographs of her and you'll see her ultra photogenic beauty shining through the page.
Claudette has it and flaunts it, but still knows how to hold something back. She is not afraid to wear rhinestone studded stretch pants or a pushup bra, nor is she afraid to wear a more subdued and elegant dress.
Although she is far from joining music's "Worst Dressed List," Claudette could certainly benefit from a fashion consultant to help her develop a more defined sense of style. Considering her young age, she has more than enough time -- and assets -- to develop into a fashion goddess.
