She only saying that know after some media training. She has sais some nasty things about Lauryn earlier. She has a very nasty attitude especially when she is trying to use someone to promote herself. She is mediocre at best. I never heard her say a nasty thing about Lauryn Hill. PROOF? Instead, in most interviews she comes across as a great fan of hers. Which fits in the pircture becasuse she really channels her miseducation sound on "shine" - which is OK. its not like lauryn hill didnt channel a lot of other artists on "miseducation" QUOTE - Estelle about Lauryn Hill ""I think they compare me to her (Lauryn Hill) because I'm dark-skinned and I sing and rap. But, if they're saying the music is just as great, then compare me all day because I'll be really happy about that"." (Estelle in Spring 2008 issue of Bleu) IF anything, she might be annoyed by the fact that she is being compared all the time. not the fact that she is being compared to lauryn hill. however, we dont have to talk about the fact that they are in two different leagues. Come on, Lauryn Hill is by far the better mc and by far the better lyricists. Her voice is better too but thats in the ear of the beholder.

In her early interviews she was definitely annoyed by the comparison, but at the same time Lauryn was being used as part of her official marketing campaign. I don't feel like searching for the interviews now for the same reason I didn't post them in the first place. I know one was done by UK journalist. He was comment on her producers and she said, " at least I didn't sleep with Wyclef." I intervies commented at that point that she could use some media trainin. Also, I think it was a Rollingstone's interview that she called Lauryn "self-righteous". It was also an interview on allhiphop.com that people reacted to her tone in a negative way in their comments. I think once she said something to effective of she was "minus the crazy" when he mention Lauryn and Amy. She soften her tone after the negative reaction she was getting. She started saying, "if people are still listening to me in 10 years then I will be happy." She had a major attitude in the beginning. The same attitude that lead her to insult Duffy and Adele which she has back off of as well. I guess since her album bombed she found out she had not made it just yet.

Pyroradio.com: In the past there has been a lot of comparisons between you and Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse how does that feel?
Estelle: They said in Rolling Stone magazine I was Amy and Lauryn minus the crazy that was funny considering I don’t look like either of them. You know what their amazing artists their music will last the test of time so I can’t be mad at it and if they listen to my work in ten years time how they listen to Lauryn put me in that lane all you want.

Yes, as I said she changed her tune. This is a later interview. I am telling you that here in America she was not well received.

>:(wow she really did dis Lauryn, I don't understand how u can steal someones style, and then disrespect them at the same time, she's a copy. Nobody ever was doing what Lauryn was doing, and the way she was doing it at the time. there's no way she didn't look to lauryn when she was choosing her style, because Lauryn was the way she's trying to be more than fifteen years ago, when u think about it the score is twelve years old. she fucked up when she said they say im like Amy and Lauryn minus the crazy and then to say she doing what is doing and she didn't have to sleep with Wyclef to do it like Lauryns some groupie prostitute who only got on, cuz she had sex with him thats the ultimate disrespect to someone especially when biting they style. And at the same time Amy Winehouse will sing her ass under the damn table. And her vocal quality is not touching lauryn's plus her rap is wack she sounds like a chicken head. Lauryn has substance in her work she's always been a socially Conscious lyricist its really an insult to compare the two cuz this broad isn't more of a lyricist than Trina. And how can she label The Miseducation and Unplugged as self Righteous, she's not just talking about her as a person, she talking about her works of art because ur music reflects ur thinking. I don't think she's going to find many Lauryn hill fans liking her here in the states, because she looks like a fake Lauryn.

Its always funny to see how words can be interpreted in so many diferent ways!
If anything, the ROLLING STONE magazine dissed Lauryn Hill. Because THEY said it ("Estelle is like Lauryn Hill minus the crazy)
here is antoher one, make what you want out of it.
AHHA: Since people started hearing you they started throwing all these crazy comparisons. Does that annoy you at all because you're your own artist?
Estelle: Oh no, I am who I am. And I just think I was never competing or explaining myself, like I'm happy and content and know it. So I put it down like they're going to figure it out at some point anyway. I just do what I'm doing. Any of the comparisons when they hear the album they hear that it's me and they're gonna be like, "Oh yeah that's Estelle.” And anyone else that comes around is going to sound like Estelle, so I'm not too bothered.
AHHA: That's cool.
Estelle: It's fun to hear who they come out with that's the funny part.
AHHA: I mean you got the biggest comparison to Lauryn and that's-
Estelle: They said the same thing about Amy.
AHHA: Ahh, that's true.
Estelle: I think any British girl who halfway sounds soulful or a little bit to the left– I think the only comparison to Lauryn is because I sing and I rap and I'm dark skinned. I swear to God that's the comparison. I bet that they get it off of that because I'm not preaching, I'm not righteous. Not to say that anything is wrong with what [Lauryn] did, she's great, she's amazing, but that is not my M.O at all.
So it's kind of like cool, but I will cancel that one real quick. I have a different point of view, and I'll let you know about it. I'm not trying to be...’cause I know I'm not perfect, and I'm not trying to act like I have it all down and all together because Lord knows I don't.

FO
We will agree to disagree on this one. I think she is arrogant and cocky when her talent does not support it. If she is confident in herself than I applaud that, but don't come out downgrading other artist especially when you are using them to promote yourself. She is also being less than honest when she knows Lauryn was the blueprint to her whole album.

I don't think Estelle would disrespect Lauryn. I have followed Estelle since she did "Drop Me in the Middle" with Natasha Bedingfield. People miconstrue articles and interviews all the time. It's a wonder what taking a few words out can do.
What would be Estelle's purpose in disrespecting Lauryn? Just because someone tries to shy away from getting compared to someone, doesn't mean they think they are better than that person.

All this doesn't explain her saying that regarding her producers, at least she didn't have to sex with Wyclef, to say something like that you have to low moral character. like Lauryn was some groupie, like she was having sex with this dude, to get on. Then she turns around and completely dismisses her talent. Yeah rolling stone said im like Lauryn minus the crazy. Thats calling Lauryn Crazy It doesn't matter if they said it she repeated it, she perpetuated it, it's the most dismissive thing you could do to someone, to label them crazy,. because it throws away and dismisses everything they have to say. Say what you want but if Lauryn heard this she would feel disrespected.

Her new song out is an absolute copy of Lauryn's 'Everything is Everything' and 'Doo Wop' video clips. Maybe she can create some of her own music, and then be praised for her work. Lauryn wrote lyrics, sang all vocals and arranged the music, and produced it all. Seriously all this comparing to Lauryn is making her feels like she is the next legend, and is an insult to Lauryn. She is just mainstream and rying to cash in on whatever she can. Artists who lack creativity disappoint me so much.
