Lauryn Hill in PARIS (July, 5th 2005)
Review:
Let's do this.
First, it seems you guys are all nervous about this review, I understand, I really do, but, really, DON'T !
So, she was kinda late, the show began at 8pm and she started at something like 9.50pm or 10pm, I can't tell exaclty.
The Dj scracthed some of his stuff, and I heard a rap song, I though it was a new Lauryn Hill's stuff, but I have some doubt now, though it was really hot, some good harsh rhymes with a pretty good instrumental behind. The crowd started to scream her name, and then they boo, but it was ok, they were just impatient cause the trains here stops at 1am.
And we heard a cute voice, that got stronger... and she said :
"settle down , settle down".
And then, she appeared, all dress in a big white coat and she had an afro, she was hot as hell, no doubt, she looked good, I didn't want to say that before, though, now that I've seen her I know what I'm talkin about. She sure did the shops here .
She started with "That Thing", a pretty common version with the band, it was ok, but the sound was horrible, I felt aggressed by the bass, I even had to cover my hears, something I never do, and I've never done before, even when I was on the first rank. But after that song, she asked to shut down the bass, and the sound was better, though it wasn't really good, it was ok.
After That Thing, she performed "Lost Ones", with the band too, a version a lil bit different from Cartier's, but it was cool, and she started to dance, she jumped everywhere, she even did the duck's dance, and she kneeled when she said "need to get down on his knees and repent".
So she definitly wanted to show, she had the thing in her last night, I'm tellin you.
She said she were going to perform a song she didn't perform a lot, and she wanted us to hear that, but the public was kinda lukewarm sometimes, and I think she wanted to make the move, so she sang "The Sweetest Thing", and she pushed to a more moving tune.
Oh, btw, her voice was def good, better than in Chicago I think, no failures, strong and loud, with some higher moments.
She did a the HOTTEST version of "I had To Walk", incredible, the band was GREAT on this one, she sang one of her best song of the night here, but, don't ask me why cause you know, the audience wasn't hot, they were like clapping cause they felt they had to, but this one was great, wait for it.
And then, just because she wanted to make Philo wrong, she performed "JUST LIKE THE WATER", she sang good, though because of the sound it wasn't as good as the Unplugged one, but anyway it's all different and harder in real live, so, I don't even compare, but it was real' good, I'm tellin you.
Then, the public wasn't moving at all, they didn't understand the lyrics for the most part, and she decided to do some old songs again. And so she performed "Final Hour", and she was dancin and moving all aroung, she gave the best she had on this one, and the public responded the same way, moving quite good.
And she did "Miseducation", she sang good, and the public was happy, she gave them what they wanted.
And she made a break, and she began to talk about the place of business in music, and she said we, the public, have extremely high expectations, and she understand it very well, but she just asked to put artist on a lower level, cause they're fragile persons, they do have hard times. She also stated that the business is too important in music, and that she has no problem with business, but it has to come after the passion. She said she had very hard time, she searched herself, she was part in a struggle/war between the people that make music cause they wanna do business and the people that do it cause the Love it.
She said she had difficult times, she had "FOUR CHILDREN, I HAD FOUR CHILDREN, LOOK AT ME, I HAD TO GET BACK TO MY FIT SIZE, JUST LOOK AT ME, I'M ALL GOOD, AND I HAD FOUR CHILDREN", that was definitly funny, she laughed with the part of the audience that got what she said, and she was smiling, and doing some "Look at my bully, and my hips, oh yeah, you can, do it" moves.
She said she's married to a case-man, that dragged her by the hair, and who's not easy to live with, but she's good now.
After the confessions, she started to sing "To Zion", for the audience I guess, and it was good too, anyway she didn't do anything bad, except That Thing bcause of the sound system.
She said "I didn't plan to perform that, but someone want me to do it, and I think some of you'd like to hear it".
"Killing me Soflty", pretty much like the BET version, but not as worked, even though it took 5/10 minutes for her to get the band ready, and she know what she's doin, and believe me, especially Orange Shoe, THE BAND DOES NOT SUCK AT ALL, they're having fun and they're doing good, she even said "please thank them cause they're workin hard, and they're workin really good with passion".
After that, she did "How Many Mics" and "Fu-Gee-La", quite hot, peeps got mad at dancin, it was a good moment, though I started to wander if ever she'll sing something else with her guitar. But I was just happy to be there, believe me.
Then she performed "Ex-Factor", and I know Philo would have love it, it was the best love version of it, a lil bit maintream, but the voice was great.
Therfore, she continued with "Everything is Everything", and like I said, she performed it good, but it was mainly for the audience.
And after this song, she stopped it and said "Thank You", and left.
The audience started to cheer like I never heard before, they screamed "Lauryn" twice harder than in Chicago, though I think the room was smaller then. I didn't really believe she was gonna leave, but when a guy took up her guitar, I though "ok, we're done, twas good, though not enought guitar but the sound was like "0
And after 4/5 minutes, SHE CAME BACK, and she performed :
-Damnable Heresies, a version I like better than the one in Chicago, more powerful.
-Freedom Time, the same as Cartier.
-Conformed to Love.
She said "let's make one more tune and we go", and she sang :
"Rich Man", with some impro, it was Hot, but then again peeps got tired, though they were trying to move they're arms, but they couldn't, ahaha.
She compared this tune with the Redemption song, saying "this is a redeption song, not the redemption song, but my redemption song".
This is it, I remember she asked the people that understood english to translate to other people and then she said "Oh no, you're too selfish for that right" with a ironic smile, cause it was true, nobody asked, too proud.
Let me say the show was GOOD, I can't say great because of the sound system and of the lack of spiritual tunes, but I enjoyed it, she moved a lot, A LOT !
Be ready you peeps, she's probably do the same, SHE'S BACK !
