I have to say thank you so much!!! It's crazy because during this time, runboard, and laurynet and this site was so crazy. We all were expecting something new to come but it just never came. I still think it was sad the fugues reunion didn't come about. I think it was just bad timing for where Lauryn was in her head. Also she has a special bond with clef. You can see how she looks at him. Not saying she still was/is in love with him but you can def see a spark that lights her up around him. I miss this era. It was of so much to come. And I loved her look man! Those photo shoots she looked like such a goddess! Can't believe this was just hiding in plain sight. Crazy the it was blocked by Sony. So evil. Seeing her laugh, dance and break free in this documentary is refreshing because around that time she a lot of times always looked serious. And you see how close she got to her fans and even her musicians vs the claims that she was didn't allow ppl to touch her or talk to her smh.this was refreshing!

Deep bond there was/is. I'm 'bout to watch it now. SaveSaveSaveSave

Gold Indeed! Thanks for the footage. As a devoted admirer of Lauryn Hill's craft, this documentary even in rough form answers so many lingering questions many of us had. It's interesting to see that ten years later it seems as if she is still plagued with the same three questions: Another Fugees Album, Another Solo Album, or another break. Those questions have plagued her for the last 15 years. Also very interesting to me is the agony she seems to live with over the path God has chosen for her. There is so much there to unpack, I may need to put the rest of my thoughts in a follow up post. The overall take aways for me boils down to a couple of things. First, if Lauryn never puts out another CD, we are so fortunate to have lived at a time to witness art in its purest form, by one of the best to ever do it. Second, she's hasn't lost her love for music and creativity. She detest "show business" and would rather a real connection through her art as opposed to playing the game. Lastly, in my humble opinion, she is still hurt. Many people exploited her and took advantage of her enormous talent and I believe she never got over it. Personally, I'm happy she's at least a touring artist again and have been consistently touring for about five years now, which is longer than any touring stint in the past. I pray that she becomes clear about her path, forgive and allow herself to be vulnerable again, so God can continue to use her and her gifts to help heal the world. Her voice is needed and missed.

Exactly my thoughts ! I was so surprised at First like "is it for real ? Is it a prank ?" but nah it's definitely Lauryn Hill laughing like L boogie and talking while laying on a bed/chair (sorry English is my 2d language, I don't remember how to call what she is laying on in the hotel room). I think I've watched the footage at least 5 times already. I was so happy but none of my real life friends would have understood how this shit is unbelievable so I had to share it with my Fugees online peeps so you're welcome ya'll. Yes I remember how we used to crave for info even back in the days of the Sony forum ! I was like 20 and we were always speculating because nothing new happened until Dave Chapelle Block party I think (or the Tsunami benefit in Malaysia actually). I'm so happy to finally see other footage of DC Block Party that I followed on Okayplayer at that time, or the behind the scenes impro in Aruba (we were all commenting the pics and the look she had that day). Just so much cool info... Like you pbsmd, it makes me realize that she's been dealing with the same issues for a little more than 15 years now. Although I think she has almost found balance and peace given that she is communicating through social media and is definitely close to releasing an album or at least new recordings. As I always tell my friends who have given up on her, she is one of the last true ones. To me the only last giant alive is Stevie, Prince, MJ, Whitney are gone. Lauryn is their heir. And what reassures me is that she was able to do what a few did, she raised a family without any (apparent) dysfunctioning. To me it says a lot of an artist. even her peers who are considered geniuses like Badu, Mos, D'Angelo still root for her. I won't give up on that woman, she is something elle. Gold Indeed! Love the way he's cut the quote about the first n***** always getting shot, second one's a genius into 'The Mystery of Iniquity'. I see so many ripping her off, thieving all the fruits of her suffering and struggle, and taking all the credit.
That's why I can have no respect for Kanye et al. All superficial. No substance.
MLH IS a genius. I love the Aruba jam backstage, and the song they were working on in the studio. Powerful indeed.
Water for the thirsty.
Thank you!! <3

I've already watched it like 5 times. It was actually quite surreal. We only get snippets of her. So actually being able to see her for close to an hour talking intimately and personally about her life was incredible. She is so fascinating. And I hope her friends does another documentary about her as so much has happened since this documentary. I was angered by the fact that the opening credit said that Sony had put the cuffs on any films being made about her, even though this documentary was made with her full consent, they wouldn't allow the filmmaker to release it. It made me think of all of the other things she's done musically, videos, books she's written and it not being released. I swear Prince was right when he said record contracts are like prison sentences. I hope and prays that she finds an independent route to release her own content.

Wow! I've wanted to see this documentary since 2005 when I first read the trace article. It was fascinating to watch her, I think she has come a long way since here. She seems much happier now and more confident in herself. I wish that they would create a documentary on her now, we haven't heard her speak for so long. This was an exciting time, but I wonder if the excitement of new music from her is over??

I find it weird that sony would block this doc considering everyone wanted to know what was going on. I wonder if this is the real reason she goes by Ms. Lauryn Hill. I bet Sony has some type of hold on her name. Mentally I couldnt see her releasing an album during this time even though I think it would have been amazing.

I'm sure we will get something some day. I do believe she is much more secure now than here. Despite appearing hard she was incredibly vunrublue at this time underneath that exterior and that's how the trace magazine acuratley portrayed her. She is the Nina Simone of our time and I hope something gets released some day

That's what happened to the Jackson 5; they had to use an alternative name. I bet there is more to the documentary too.
