Crazy how the world works. JUST this morning I was listening to the 2013 live version of this song and I really had wished Lauryn released it. My friend texted me to tell me about her song being featured in this documentary and it’s this very song. The article is interesting. Lauryn seems to be taking a stance here In support of a long time industry friend. www.google.com/amp/s/ew.com/music/2020/01/26/new-lauryn-hill-song-russell-simmons-documentary-on-the-record/amp/I like the idea that Lauryn is releasing these songs only with full purpose and intention. This track was handpicked by Ms. Hill herself and plays at the end of the credits. I’m excited to hear this if the film comes about.

Ms. Hill supports the women accusing him.
In the 1990s, the Fugees member (then known as simply Lauryn Hill) worked closely with Drew Dixon, who is a central source in On the Record, a doc centered on women who have accused music mogul Russell Simmons of rape and sexual misconduct. Ms. Lauryn Hill wrote and produced “A Rose Is Still a Rose” by Aretha Franklin, one of the first breakout single moments in Dixon’s career. In the film and in reports, Dixon has accused Simmons of raping her when they worked together at Def Jam Records.

The article seems to infer that the film does not yet have a distribution deal. Hopefully, its not shelved and we never get to hear the song. I pray it leaks or Lauryn releases it on her own.

I am just as tired of all these people coming forward now that it's popular to say, I did not willingly consent to those advances. It like those girls I always see standing in the hallway when the nba players are going to the locker room. I keep asking the question, how did they get past security? They didn't! They are planted there! However, as soon as one of these player swoop in for a bite; oh I'm pregnant. You threw yourself under the bus for a paycheck. This sex game is as old as dirt. Most of these people know the price. They will sleep with the distributor, the dj, the hangers-oners,(if they daddy is powerful/rich enough) etc. then later on talking about the industry cheated them. They could have left before the party go started. Oh I want to be famous and now look at all these women and men crying foul. Maybe the initiants ( I didn't want webster to have all the words) need to record the participator so when they cry we can see were they real tears or you was faking like it okay. Do I get the contract, modeling job, role in the play, movie, make the team, get the commercial. Stop the madness! What does damnable heresies have to do with the film? NOTHING. Liken unto "guarding the gate" and legs open before they got on the road as fugitives. You all will buy anything. Look for context and not just inclusion. Will somebody start back using what is between your ears and not your legs for a change? Then and only then maybe we as a people can advance above dogmatism. This one is appropriate; if you want to be real.

She sounds really good. Her voice is nice and smooth and emotes beautifully. I hope she releases the full version. I would love to hear the song in its entirety as well as her reason for including it in the documentary.

The voice is nice. However, it sounds like a younger version of this song. The rattle is too much and the bongos. Let the lyrics speak. I know we talking slavery but I think this can be expressed without the bongos or rattle.

Any news on the full release of this song? Or any update on Ms Hill in general? I liked her performance on Small Biz live and love the idea of her Community MLH. Hopefully we hear something soon.
