After years of speculation, the film 'Nina' is officially in pre-production! Mary J. Blige will play Nina Simone on screen where the film focuses on Nina Simone's rise to fame and her relationship with her manager Clifton Henderson. I do think Mary J. Blige can do this role justice and even an Oscar Award nomination could be in the air. For more info, hit the link below; www.imdb.com/title/tt0493076/

Saw this the other day, It's still in pre-production so god knows when it will be released. I think it's quite a delicate story and they need to get it just right. There was a great documentary about Nina Simone on BBC radio last year, it was by her daughter she was such a fascinating person. It would be hard for Mary to play her, but I'm sure she will do well if she is dedicated to doing her justice.

I agree with Moderator i think Mary can hit a home run with this but the question is , is Mary ready ? This has been in talks for several years and they even started shooting last may and stopped because Mary had to do the Movie Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise and they were suppose to resume shooting in October it was put on hold , and now its in limbo. My guess would be that Nina was a very complex individual with many many layers and it would take a seasoned actress to really get her so maybe they are having 2nd thoughts as well as Mary, but we will have to wait and see , i really think its in her though and the surface similarities i definitely see it. As far as Lauryn i think Nina and Lauryn are so similar in personality that if Lauryn played her (And i'm sure she will do a damn good job) it would be almost like watching Lauryn play herself. I had a picture of Mary and Nina that i wanted to share with you guys but i don't know how to attach it on here but you guys would see what i'm talking about. I also think there is an upcoming talent who would do an AMAZING job her name is Adepero Oduye who starred in the film Pariah

I agree, letsbringitback, Adepero Oduye is a great talent who could do an amazing job as well. Pariah really featured some great performances, including Aasha Davis and Kim Wayans

Good News (for me, anyway) Mary J. Blige is no longer playing the role of Nina Simone--Yaayyy! ;D Bad News ( for many people) Zoe Saldana is supposed to replace her--say whaaa? Somebody actually started a petition about the Saldana choice: Since the announcement of Saldana as the lead in Nina's biopic was made, a petition on Change.org has been created, which demands that Saldana be replaced. Supporters of the petition would rather that role go to Lauryn Hill, Adepero Oduye, India.Arie or Viola Davis. The petition, however, has been met with criticism by some who believe the role of Nina Simone is turning into a debate about one actress being "blacker" than another. Those who support Zoe, who is outspoken about being an Afro-Latina, say that her Blackness should not be defined by the color of her skin or the straightness of her hair. The fact that Zoe is Black Dominican is all that should matter. If standards of Black beauty in this country didn't have a history of being valued and de-valued based upon their semblance to whiteness as the standard then maybe it wouldn't matter. www.huffingtonpost.com/nicole-moore/zoe-saldana-nina-simone_b_1837917.htmlNina Simone's daughter is not too happy about the movie: EBONY: Can you clarify your feelings about the casting of Zoe Saldana to play your mother?Simone: I love Zoe Saldana’s work. I’ve seen some of her movies more than once and really enjoy what she brings to the screen. As an actress I respect her process, but I also know that there are many actresses out there, known or not, who would be great as my mother. The one actress that I’ve had in my heart for a very long time, whose work I’m familiar with already, is Kimberly Elise. Many people have spoken to me about Viola. I love her look. I love her energy. Both of the actresses that I’ve mentioned are women of color, are women with beautiful, luscious lips and wide noses, and who know their craft. I also have no problem introducing someone we’ve never heard of before who can play my mother. EBONY: This project that’s going forward, you’ve talked about having little to nothing to do with it. How does that happen?S: I’ve been asking myself that question. How does that happen? As I said on my blog, when the announcement came out approximately six years ago that Mary J. Blige had been cast to play Nina Simone, I heard it along with everyone else and I was very concerned. How does someone just decide to do a story about someone and completely bypass family? Completely bypass her representatives? We offered to get involved with all the stuff that we have, from the music, to the pictures, to her writings, to connecting them with the stories of many people who were close to my mother, and we were ignored. thegrio.com/2012/08/22/nina-simones-daughter-speaks-out-on-casting-of-zoe-saldana-in-mothers-biopic-we-were-ignored/#s:zoe-saldana-nina-simone-16x9-2

I am really happy about Mary J not playing Nina Simone, she is a really good singer but she never struck me as someone with a deep personality. I mean apart from the drug abuse and the heartbreaks she does not sing about the same uplifting themes as Nina did. Also I agree with what guest 21 said earlier in the thread; even though Ms Hill would do an amazing job it would associate them too much. Also Ms Hill seems to be a sensitive person and I am not sure playing the life of Ms Simone would be morally easy as she battled very heavy stuff. To me playing Rita Marley made much more sense but for obvious reasons, the audience would make illogical assumptions and comparisons. I am pretty sure she was approached for these roles and if she refused, she made a good choice. She is a very good actor and it would be good to see her in another movie but maybe something based on a fiction. As with Zoe saldana, i really hope she won't get the part considering all the negative stuff she said about black actresses. plus, she is not a good actress to me. ladona: I saw Lizz Wright, Dianne Reeves & Simone perform at Montreux jazz festival in 2009, their rendition of 4 woman was amazing, dianne Reeves brought so much emotion as always.

Well, after many years and our initial reservations about Zoe Saldana being cast to portray the legendary Nina Simone in 2012, she has now apologised publicly for accepting this role. edition.cnn.com/2020/08/06/entertainment/zoe-saldana-nina-simone-apology-scli-intl/index.htmlThe performance by Mary J. Blige in ‘Mudbound’ in 2017 earned her two Oscar nominations, Best Performance in a Supporting Role and Best Achievement in Music Writing for Motion Pictures (Original Song), Mighty River. I believed MJB was the right choice for this role back then, and I still believe that MJB was the right choice to portray Nina Simone.
