Lauryn's take on 'One Step Ahead' gave me goosebumps. Sounds like something from one of the great soul singers like Gladys, or Etta James. I like the relaxed, slowed-down and soulful composition of these covers - I was worried that she was going to turn it into funk music, but she didn't, and managed to capture the meaning of the songs. Her back-up singers (Yolanda, Tanikka, and Jeanette) also sounded beautiful. I wonder if the museum will post the entire concert.

this is what I am talking about!!! She sounds AWESOME! This is why I don't pay attention to other's reviews bc they are basing their reviews on the old Lauryn. You go girl!!! ;D

I wish they had an interview with Aretha to ask her what she thought of Lauryn's performance

It's really beautiful and the ladies sound beautiful! The end note on "One Step Ahead" is amazing!

Favorit.. ^ XD One Step Ahead COver Aretha Franklin Y'know, after giving her cover of "One Step Ahead" a few more listens, I think my appraisel of it was a bit of an understatement. Lauryn's voice has certainly matured into a deep, passionate, and unique instrument profused with soul and emotion. That's not to say that it hasn't always been, but I think it's clear now that she has greater confidence in her singing. And this cover is proof. It's calm, climatic, and beautifully yet subtlely doleful. You can tell the musicians put a lot of carefulness into the production - more instruments than on the original, and the major effort by the back-up singers along with the horns is just brilliant. Aretha's version was lovely, but this version sounds like it was sung and made from a different perspective. I love, love, love it.

^^me too. maybe we should email Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ET, or whoever the original source is, to release the full version of her performance if they can. it doesn't cost us anything to try, right?

Not a bad idea. It sure wouldn't hurt. I completely agree. I love her version of this song. My favorite is the end where she actually improved it from the original version.
