Lauryn Hill, seen here performing in April at the Coachella music festival in Indio, Calif., is coming to Cleveland for the American Music Masters tribute concert in honor of Aretha Franklin on Saturday, Nov. 5, at PlayhouseSquare's State Theatre. Grammy Award-winning singer Lauryn Hill will join Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Dennis Edwards of the Temptations and Ronald Isley of the Isley Brothers for an all-star salute to Aretha Franklin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at PlayhouseSquare’s State Theatre in Cleveland.
The concert will cap a weeklong American Music Masters salute to the Queen of Soul, presented by the Rock Hall and Case Western Reserve University.
Hill, a founding member of the Fugees, won five Grammys for her solo debut, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” and wrote the title track of Franklin’s “A Rose Is Still a Rose” album. Hill has kept a low profile in recent years.
Also on the bill for the show are Rock Hall nominee Chaka Khan, keyboardist Spooner Oldham, vocalist Cissy Houston, jazz singer Carla Cook, “American Idol” alumnus Melinda Doolittle and singer-guitarist Mike Farris. Additional guests will be announced in the next few weeks.
Franklin will attend the concert, although she is not scheduled to perform. Tickets are $30-$50 at the PlayhouseSquare box office, or charge by phone, 216-241-6000. For VIP packages (starting at $250), call 216-515-1207.
The AMM festivities in Franklin’s honor also will include a performance by the Blind Boys of Alabama on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Rock Hall, as well as various educational programs.
Following is the complete schedule. Unless otherwise noted, events are free and will be held in the Rock Hall’s Foster Theater.
