QUICK REVIEW by Emma from Runboard "woooo! REally? I was expecting it to be awful, her voice is shot completely theres no doubt about it, but the band were so great and the energy and her prescence i LOVED...also the first time ever i saw your face and will u still love me tomorrow, i thought she killed it...i really fell back in love with her voice again and also on lose myself i loved it!! She wasnt too late at all, only about 30 mins...but she broke the curfew which was 11, she got off around 20past..but the dude in the wings was going CRAZY he was really getting mad at her cos he was shining a torch at her to tell her curfew and she just said ok "1 more song" then was like "no, 2 more songs" then actually did 4! ha. I really enjoyed it! Plus the fact that she actually admitted the condition of her voice was crap when she started singing the first time ever i saw your face she said she shouldnt try to sing such songs when her voices is in the condition it is, but im glad she did sing it! I really had a good time once I managed to ignore the screaming..." THANKS emma! glad you enjoyed the show!!!

REVIEW by GigwiseJust days after hundreds of fans walked out early during her show in Oakland, Lauryn Hill has come under fire from British fans for her “dismal” performance at London’s Hammersmith Apollo last night (July 8). What was supposed to be a glorious return to British shores turned into a farce with Hill singing in a “croaky” and “out-of-tune” voice after turning up late on stage. The performance prompted many fans to abandon the show. Gigwise has received a deluge of messages from fans complaining about Hill’s performance. One wrote to us: “Her croaky shouting could barely be heard over the band - disappointing when the audience came to hear her beautiful, soulful voice and inspiring lyrics.” Story continues below... Another wrote: “She was being booed after about 20-30mins and I would say after about 45 mins people were leaving en masse.” A more damning comment reads: “I went to the Hammersmith Apollo gig and what is wrong with the woman? Voice has gone, the band was bad and she comes in late and doesn’t perform many people weren’t happy and hundreds left wanting refunds. If you have tickets for any of her shows get rid of as soon as you can.” While a fan who walked out on the show early said: “No warmth, no soul and absolutely no connection with the audience. With her crazy hair and raincoat she reminded me of a bag lady you’d avoid if you saw her in the street, or at best, Whitney in her crack days.” It seems fans in Birmingham tonight (July 9) and Newcastle tomorrow are in for a cracking show. source: www.gigwise.com/news.asp?contentid=34403

It is really weird how the press could even dare to call Ms Lauryn Hills performance a failure.. press which i can honestly say is inconsistent with the opinion of the majority of fans who waited around after the concert and were still buzzing from Ms Hills performance. A very small minority of fans walked out of the show, this aspect is true. However as i looked around at the end of the show the Apollo was still jam packed. Ms Hill true to form arrived to the concert late, but i expected this and the introduction that the band created although long was absolutely spectacular.Initially Lauryn tried to hide behind the drums before she walked on stage, but the crowd could all see her straight away and the floor absolutely erupted, prompting Lauryn to show her face. The opening and a number of the other early songs was truly a disappointment. I say this as a huge fan, which is why it is difficult to say. The songs were messy and it was difficult to hear Lauryn over the band, also the beats were played quite fast and were almost unrecognizable. At this point i found myself looking around the Apollo theatre to gauge the fans reaction and it looked like many fans were disappointed and confused. There was definitely a lack of connection. It almost felt like i was still waiting for Lauryn to arrive... And then all of a sudden Lauryn turned up. The turning point of the show was when Lauryn sang "The first time ever i saw your face" when her voice really shone, it was like two different performers after this song!!Lauryn took my breath away. Before the song Lauryn had said that she shouldn't really sing this song with her voice in this condition, but i am so glad she did. From this point on Lauryn absolutely killed it. The crowd got involved the quality of the songs improved dramatically. From then on "lose myself", "ready or not", "killing me softly", "everything is everything", "dat thing"," ex factor", "will you still love me tomorrow" and a few others were performed better than anybody else in the industry could have delivered them.I say that with no hesitation.. she was THAT good. From" the first time ever i saw your face"the momentum of the concert completely changed which was easily carried through to the end of the show, due to the strength and quality of these following performances which meant that Ms Hill had now won the fans over and created a tingling and exciting energy in the crowd. So yes it is true that Ms Hills voice was croaky, she turned up late, and early on the concert was uncomfortable as the fans looked almost confused. However during the course of this concert Ms Hill arrived; her voice got stronger, she made the crowd fall in love with her all over again after a ten years absence and all with a beautiful smile on her face, a great energy and enthusiasm and with the presence of a true performer. Early on in the concert Lauryn expressed that she viewed the tour as a stage of rehabilitation. Although not particularly qualified i would say that Ms Hill is doing rather well Bring on a new album.. And in response to Lauryn's question which she posed to the crowd " will you still love me tomorrow"a question which she said was particularly relevant and held huge significance. The answer Ms Hill is a resound Yes!!

Thank you so much. I truly appreciate your review. I simply love her rendition of "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." I keep telling people she is better than ever. I think her voice is far superior than when she was younger. I keep telling my friends and family if they will truly give her a chance and listen to her performances lately they would agree. I know she is still working things out, but I can't wait for the end result.

I was there last night and cannot believe the review from the press. Why oh why do the press hate her so much? The gig last night was amazing and I am still reeling from it. Lauryn Hill has changed since her first album, deal with it! I saw some people walk out but if they'd stayed they would've seen her sing songs from the fugees days, to rapturous applause, her miseducation stuff, to even louder applause and then lose myself which was amazing. She had a bad throat, yet still managed to sing better than any singer I've ever heard. Lauryn rules, and I've seen it with my own eyes. Don't listen to any press reviews, go see her for yourself, and then decide if she's worth it or not. Much love x

It would be labouring the point a bit to consider Gigwise as "the press". In pre-internet days it would have existed (if at all) as something photocopied, held together with staples and sold at gigs for 20p.
I was at the gig, and agree pretty much entirely with Maximo. The one thing I think it's important to say is that before I went, I read a few of the reports of recent gigs here, and actually ended up not really looking forward to the show as a result. If anyone reading this has tickets for upcoming gigs, I'd say to try to go with an open mind and please don't be put off or allow your excitement to be dampened by people with negative opinions. (And particularly don't pay any attention to the person who said that she's wearing long sleeves to hide signs of drug abuse! Errr... right, so everyone wearing long sleeves is on smack? Right, that'll be... um... almost everyone, then. That kind of logic is so hilariously wrong that it almost deserves some kind of award.)
If you want to hear the whole of Miseducation played exactly as it sounded on the album, then you're going to be deeply disappointed. If you want to sing along to songs you know and be blown away by the crystal clarity of her voice, then once again you'll probably be disappointed. But if you're interested in hearing where Ms Hill has gone over the last ten years and how she rethinks and reworks her old songs now, then you're going to find it fascinating.
It's worth bearing in mind that not only is she a different person than she was ten years ago (and so are all of us), while she's changed we've had very little opportunity to see that change happening. Most other artists would have released maybe four or five albums in that time - she's released one, and that was little more than a series of demos. So in our heads she should still be the Lauryn Hill of Miseducation and The Score, when to her, that must be so old and boring.
People who've been around a long time generally make changes to their old material when they play it live, and when that works, it keeps it interesting for everybody (eg Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan). Some people just go out and play their old hits again and again (Rolling stones etc) and while that makes them a lot of money and keeps their fans happy and paying for tickets the next time the tour rolls around, it doesn't make for very exciting music, and in some cases just turns once great bands into little more than karaoke stars. I'd rather pay to watch Lauryn Hill trying to stay relevant and keep the music interesting for her as well as for us, than pay to watch her pretending it was still 1998. I was lucky enough to see her Brixton Academy and Wembley shows when Miseducation was out, and those - particularly Brixton - were magnificent. This was different, but isn't it supposed to be? I'm happy I've got both sets of memories - how it was then, and what she's trying to do now - rather than watching her trying now to turn back the clock. That would have been pointless, and very depressing.

This is strong. It has the same Intensity like "killing me softly" at the block party or "I gotta find peace of mind" from unplugged. She has tears in her eyes. This is touching me!
This would be nice as MP3!!!!
