Lauryn Hill, July 14th 2005, Lucca, Summer Festival, Piazza Napoleone
Lauryn Hill, in italian will be Lauretta Collina, Collina as the international referee, he’s from Viareggio, Viareggio is near Lucca, we are in Lucca, Piazza Napoleone. Strange associations of ideas to pass the time, time that Lauryn, as good wilful diva, let us wait. One hour of delay. This thing, with all the rumors and the legends that I’ve heard about her, let the situation being worrying. Strong woman but lunatic, fickle but potentially enormous artist.
Four years ago, in Pisa, let all astonished with an acoustic and minimal concert, prelude to her second solo album, that controversial ‘’MTV Unplugged 2.0’’, seemed almost an arm wrestling (that Lauryn won) with the label, force to issue a double live full of unreleased, but most of all full of mistake and chat, chat where Miss Marley get herself naked, talk about the reason of changing, and even cry during a song. A record very beautiful, of course, but nine tracks (interludes, intro and outro) that aren’t songs, could it be a little redundant.
Now, no record in stores, here she is: 13 (anyway, these are those that I was able to count!) musicians and 3 chorister, a sound even full, a stage streaming people. At 10,30 PM all the musicians gets on the stage, while she, that by my point of view, a little far, seems to do a deed to say “I’m not going to get on stage by this wood chute”, enter by another access. But now she is, she’s here, and she couldn’t go away so easily: there’s an entire square (anyway, not exactly full) that will be going crazy to hold her. Afro hair style, long skirt, beige jacket. Seeing her so close, and by the screens that shoot her often in close up, is beautiful of an almost unnatural beauty. She seems a black Barbie. In spite of her height (not so much), she walk with head high, pride and bold. And strike up Doo Woop (That Thing) , loaded and groovy. The sound, as already said, is full and, sometimes, overhang the voice; maybe she wants it. For the first three songs, there’s some little smear, the voice isn’t warm yet. During That Thing there’s a piece of the hit pop-soul of the moment 1Thing by Amerie, then is the time of a new song, Lauryn plays an acoustic guitar; there’s a flamenco flavour inside, mixed with funky, and we like it. Then there’s Lost Ones, and inside it seems to hear something of 50Cent. But is on The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill that the voice become amazing, and the result is a big version of a beautiful song. Then Just Want You Around, very funky, that start with a “scat” of Lauryn. About Marley, here is To Zion, with Iron, Lion, Zion inside. It’s very hot tonight. Now we’re going to soul (a step ahead respect the common r’n’b), so here is The Sweetest Thing, still more hot. Back to hip-hop with Final Hour; Lauryn drive the band with authority, give the times, cast a fire looks. She moves with a rap style, not really elegant, but this is her style, take it or leave it. The square is dancing, and who isn’t in the first lines dance on the seats. Take a breath, Lauryn takes the guitar again, and plays Sacred Love, intense, full of passion, with her heart by the hands. It seems to live again the touching moment of the live@MTV, but she’s here, and she’s in front of our eyes. What a voice! An huge, immense potential, I repeat. Here is the Fugees time: Ready Or Not, beautiful version, sturdy, How Many Mics and Fu-gee-la. All the people in the square is moving on. Then, another acoustic moment. The beautiful Lauryn take the guitar, stop the people that clapping hands, ask for the silence. Hey, Mr. Ben Harper, learn! It’s Just Like Water, wonderful, syncopated, a “crescendo” when the band enter, an almost gospel final. Then Damnable Heresies, another rap unreleased, Ex-Factor that, rearranged in the vocals part and with reggae inserts, is amazing. The audience is conquered, and take the ex smash-hit Killing Me Softly so as it is, weak, smooth, too much pop: worst thing of the evening. Everything Is Everything let the quality going back to the top, and mark the end, if all should it be bad (with Lauryn Hill, you know, it’s possible). But, on the contrary, maybe a miracle, the audience scream and the golden voice moves to pity, or maybe she just want to give an encore, she’s back for a very hard funk version of Freedom Time. Relax Lauryn, take it easy, do it as you want: but please, give us another record. There’s the feeling that this woman could mix funky, r’n’b, soul, folk, hip-hop without competitor, there’s the certainty that her voice is something decidedly superior. For this reason we all need that you find the peace of mind, to dedicate make music. We’re waiting for you Lauryn, don’t let us be worry as tonight.

It's "Want too Much" not "Take too Much" and it was not played in Lucca or anywhere else in Europe. Neither was Guarding the Gates. Both are on the the Los Angeles, Cartier videos.
