Amy Winehouse just recently released her 2nd studio album entitled "BACK TO BLACK". Many critics and fans often compare her style of singing to Lauryn Hill... even Questlove from the ROOTS stated in one of his BLOG entries, that "BACK TO BLACK" is the album Lauryn Hill would have killed for. Amy Winehouse is 23 years old and from England. Her deep, jazz influenced voice is unique and her sound is so too. A blend of hiphop beats and oldschool soul and jazz harmonies and arrangements. I really dig the new album... its on heavy rotation in my CD player. REVIEWS:
There are two clear traditions of ‘diva’ in soul music. On one side there’s Diana Ross – and her natural heir, Beyonce – all immaculate polish and surface. And on the other there are the likes of Etta James – a woman whose music reeks of desire and emotion. It’s to this ‘Dark Soul’ tradition that Amy Winehouse aspires - she’s certainly got the voice for it.
And the music. The much praised opening track, “Rehab”, comes across like an obscure northern soul gem, riddled with pathos and melodrama. In fact none of the music here sounds like it was made after 1967.
Much of the rest of this pleasingly short album - eleven three-minute or so tracks – goes on to explore the joyful misery of being young, messy and in love/lust. And Amy doesn’t paint a particularly pretty picture of herself; she plays the cuckold on “Just Friends”, and gets caught out by her ‘lickle carpet burns’ on the fabulous “I’m No Good”.
But hey, she suffers for her sins. The title track, owing much to the sonic heritage of Phil Spector and Scott Walker, is a tortured monster of a track - Amy displaying the sort of vocal depth that Marc Almond has always dreamed of.
The second half of the album isn’t quite as good as the first, but that’s a minor gripe. One of the best UK albums of the year, with the added advantage that you'll be able to pick it up at the local supermarket checkout...

THIS IS AS GOOD AS DUSTY SPRINGFIELD WAS IN HER TIME. DONT LET HER DOWN BY NOT LISTNING TO THE ALBUM WITH AN OPN MIND, WHICH MOST BRITTS DONT UNTIL THERE DEAD. THIS IS TOP QUALITY IN ANY GENDRE. JACK B
This album, puts Amy back on top after a long awaited return of three years. The album is in itself a magnificent attempt to dominate the charts. The title track stands out mainly due to its simplicity and soul. The emotion pours throughout the duration of the album and is clearly evident of Amy's skills as a singer. Not as entertaining perhaps as her debut album Frank, but definately shows a more grown, hurt and perhaps tamed Amy. Sameena Ahmed, Leeds
Best Album in 2006 What a Voice! Mike Kroon Amsterdam
A British talent to be proud of...makes up for the embarassing success of Joss Stone. Julie, Oldham.
Fundamentally, this is bad karaoke. Even worse than her first album - if that's possible. Karol Jakubczyk, Wiltshire

She is OK, but absolutely don't see why anyone would compare her to Lauryn. Please explain.

There is only one Lauryn Hill. Case closed. Comparisons to Ms. Hill go way beyong a husky vocal. It's the passion, the lyrical content, the creativity, the emceeing. But I'll check shorty out.

I think a better comparison would be Macy Gray. The backup singers sound good, but her I could live without.

Amy winehouse is phenomenal but she is not as good as Lauryn. Lauryn is Lauryn.I know she has jus released back to black but already i wan't to hear her third album. In the absence of Lauryn Amy is doing great.I bet Rehab is a song Lauryn wishes she had done.Imagine Lauryn Singing Rehab! It would be *BANG* Lauryn's back!!!

I read something about her in her bio on wiki and it said that she had a rap group before she was signed to a label, but went solo. That's similar to Lauryn. But i have to be honest i've been hearing her on the radio heaps in Australia now and she has grown on me. 'Rehab' is what i really like now...and it is a little Lauryn because it's unusual and she's breaking boundaries in music. Lauryn being the first woman to do so, and now other woman follow...excellent. I still think she is a bit out there with the tattoos and all, but it's not a big deal. We want music. I've learnt first impressions are not last impressions ;D

She is alright, but I am not buying. But, what is going on in the UK? Why are they pitting Joss against Amy? It seems like they want Joss to fail; because, she has suddenly become to Black. Yet, they would push this girl that has all of these addictive behaviors on display. I don't think America is going to be buying Amy in huge numbers. We already have serious problems with young women (girls) acting out. She may sell initially, but I think those people into her have already downloaded her material. I may be wrong.

Amy Winehouse is now an OKAYPLAYER artist! www.okayplayer.comA lot of the criticism in the uk towards joss stone has to do with her trying to be all american. They say she is fake, talking with a faked l.a. accent and just behaving alltogether like she is the best since sliced-bread. However, the criticism is not really about her talent and her new album. Mostly they all agree that she is incredible talented (with that voice!) and that the album is GREAT. I can only agree. I have the record "Introducing Joss Stone" since yesterday and I already love it. As for Amy Winehouse, yes, she has her problems on display and is very honest about them. What is wrong with that? You prefer all those fake artists who are in denial about their (drug)-problems? But I agree, amercian society in general will have lots of problems with her persona. So she wont become americas sweetheart, of course. However, I think she will sell a respectable amount of units. All of the okayplayer family loves her! peace!
