5-star review from independent "It's been a long time coming," says Ms. Lauryn
Hill, as she appears on the IndigO2 stage to the sold-out crowd. "We cut through so we can get back to doing it the way it should be done." (Video of that part) www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgA3leUEwgA&feature=player_embeddedThis sounds like a veiled apology for the past decade, where her eccentric behaviour and cryptic proselytizing for a religious/political cause no one could quite figure out, did little to preserve the glory that came with her brilliant, ground-breaking '98 The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Garish outfits and makeup, peculiar new songs - Social Drugs anyone? - bad vocals and frustrating re-mixes of her classics seemed to taint her last two London shows in '05 and '07, but if all this was the sum of being vexed at the music industry and any other personal woes, then tonight's show suggests she's finally made peace with the world. Flanked by an enthusiastic 7-piece band, the youthful looking 36-year-old delivers an ecstatic tribute to her musical heritage and the album that made her famous, defying any misgivings she'd lost her sparkle. The first part of the nearly two hour proceedings features a flamboyant recap of Everything is Everything, where her pitch perfect rasp evolves into a spine-tingling gospel lament, as well as a funky reworking of The Doors' Light My Fire and Marley's Concrete Jungle, which seamlessly segues into Forgive Them Father. All the while, Hill's a fearless conductor who's remarkable to look at. Completely in sync with the music, she continuously whips her head around to each band member to ensure they're keeping up and commands each song, from the ominous Final Hour to the endearing Zion. Other heartfelt numbers, like The Sweetest Thing and further tributes to Marley and Stevie Wonder also elicit approving cheers, followed by a thunderous performance of Lost Ones, and a quick dip into Fugees territory, where she truly exceeds herself, thanks to a machine-gun delivery and tomboy swagger, made all the more incredible when you're reminded she's doing all this macho posturing in a shiny, gold dress. The show's only shortcoming is the dodgy soundsystem and the fact she steers clear of the MTV Unplugged 2.0 album, which for all its criticism had some real gems - and even she points out she thought "no one wanted to hear that", promising she'll come back to perform it. But all this does little to dampen the rest of the evening, which has more than enough triumphs to certify this lady's on the comeback. SETLIST Killing Me Softly (Fugees) Everything Is Everything (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) Light My Fire - The Doors Concrete Jungle - Bob Marley Forgive Them Father (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) Final Hour (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) Zion (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) Sweetest Thing (Refugee AllStars, Love Jones Soundtrack) When It Hurts So Bad (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) I Used to Love Him (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) Nothing Even Matters (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) Lost Ones (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) Ex Factor (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) Please Don't Rock My Boat - Bob Marley Jammin' - Stevie Wonder How Many Mics - Fugees Fu-Ge-La - Fugees Ready or Not - Fugees Killing Me Softly - Fugees Turn The Lights Down Low - Bob Marley feat. Lauryn Hill – review The madness of Lauryn Hill has become something of an urban legend over the last decade – though it's hard to tell how much this is due to genuinely erratic behaviour and how much to exaggerating the eccentricities of a woman who has shown little interest in playing the industry game or furthering her career since her 1998 magnum opus, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Tonight, Hill is a mere half an hour late, not the rather implausible three hours reported in the past. She bounds on to stage, a bundle of manic energy; throughout the show, she punches the air, kicks her legs, dabs at her eyes and mutters darkly about the "enormous amount of resistance" she has faced in returning to the stage. Maybe these tics could disturb some, but they seem in keeping with her performance, manifestations of the overdue, pent-up passion that spill over the sides of her songs. On record, Hill used to be a preacher of iron will and fervour, but tonight, she proves that soul is a messy business at heart. Throughout, the restless Hill bends her catalogue into new shapes, at times abandoning song structure entirely in favour of ad-libbed tangents, elongated vowels and radically altered crunching guitar arrangements – making for an experience that, commendably, is the exact opposite of a mere nostalgic singalong. If Hill's voice is a touch ragged, the feeling she brings to When It Hurts So Bad and To Zion hits home – though, rattling through Superstar's double-time rap, her full control over her instrument is clear. A ferocious Lost Ones boils with anger, while Hill seems wholly consumed with emotion on a cathartic Ex-Factor. There are moments of levity, too. Laughing, Hill improvises a skit about a near wardrobe malfunction: "Too much baby, no more breasts/ I'm losing my dress." And in the final stretch, her laser focus suddenly kicks in with an electrifying run through her old Fugees hits: an anthemic Fu-Gee-La, a triumphant Ready Or Not, and Killing Me Softly, a spot of calm amid the frenzy that proves the show's emotional core. Hill hits and sustains a breathtaking low note, and as she intones Roberta Flack's lyrics about being moved by a singer's performance, the audience echoes them back – turning Hill herself into the song's subject. www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/apr/15/lauryn-hill-review?newsfeed=trueman, it's really nice to see all these positive reviews... i can't even believe guardian wrote that...that's really awesome...

Best concert I've EVER been to. I was the one who shouted 'Guarding the Gates'! She sang like two lines before saying the song wasn't even released and asking how I had heard it. Amazing. You can't really see it in the video, but after singing 'Too many babies, not enough breasts' she went back up the microphone and jokingly wrapped her jacket around herself to hide her breasts like she was suddenly shy - that's why she burst out laughing. ... I record the audio of the entire concert! The sound quality is great, might upload it later! PLEASE, SHARE!

just came back from the show as well....my first time seeing her live, i waited 14 years and it was amazing. absolutely brilliant performer. she seemed to be in a really good mood as well, cracking a lot of jokes. she was wearing a long dress and it kept slipping down. at one point she started singing 'losing my dress, losing my dress. i should make a song about losing my dress. too many babies, no more breasts. losing my dress" and the band started accompanying her and cracking up. people were screaming all kinds of requests. i think someone asked her to sing guarding the gates which is awesome coz i was gonna do that as well. someone yelled out just like water which she was happy about. i screamed out for her to sing peace of mind and she sang a bit of it. she was really surprised people wanted to hear the unplugged stuff and she said she would come back and do the unplugged songs. there were so many great moments tonight that i'm sure i left out. ill post some videos and photos i took tomorrow! hahhah, awesome! losing my dress, loool

Lauryn Hill has a spotty record with live performances (last time I saw her she was 3 hours late to the stage on account of getting a mani/pedi), but this performance was great! She had a huge band backing her (about ten people in all, roughly) and really engaged the crowd to tear this show apart! Track 23, "Conformed to Love" was performed as an impromptu thing, after Lauryn saw a fan holding up a poster-board sign requesting the song. Really a great show. This was my first time at Warner Theatre and I enjoyed their awesome D&B PA system; hope you do too! Download:www.mediafire.com/?xm90oedp2zkmv9por fileover.net/67113506/PS: I suck at photoshop, I made this album cover just so I can put it my mp3 library, i don't like when there's no album art, so feel free to make a better one ) PS #2: This goes to all the people that say her shows suck, cause that's clearly not true. And I know you will enjoy it as much as I do! Regards!
