everyone --
as you may know, I am a diehard admirer of Lauryn Hill - as i'm sure most of us are. everything she sings about, everything she stands for... i completely agree with and respect. and her music is so true.. she really lays out the reality of things.
however, i have heard from multiple sources that once Lauryn hill made it clear somewhere that she was pretty prejudice. something like "my music isn't for white people". now no matter what, i will always be a fan of her music. but i think as a genuine fan of hers, i would want to know what she personally stands for - and if she is racist or not. i personally, dont believe this for a minute -- unless someone here confirms it.
i'm honestly asking the people here because most of you know as much about her as i do, probably more. lauryn hill is beautiful, real, talented and speaks the truth. but i think all of us are entitled to know whether this wicked rumor i heard from many people.. all of which have nothing to do with eachother...is true or not.
if anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. if you feel uncomfertable posting this on her fan message board - please email me at gooblee1016@yahoo.com. this is a major concern of mine. however, thru thick and thin, i will always respect her music. i hope the rumors about her, as a person, are not true though.
thanks & peace

hey brinda!
did you get my mail?! I sent you an interview with lauryn hill where she says something about the rumor she was a racist. Its back from 1996... when she was live on the Howard Stern Radio Show...
maybe I can put it on my site as well but I dont have the time right now. It's pissing me off that this rumor is still floating around on the internet... maaaan! that was back in 1996! and in that interview she made clear that the rumor is absurd!
brinda, if you have the time you could type the interview and i put it on the site... so people get the truth.
peace!

Thanks, fugees-online! Yes, I got your email.
I listened to the sound clip – and here is a long excerpt from the interview (all concerning racial statements about her) ** I don’t know the name of Howard’s co star, cause personally, I think the man is freaky as hell and I don’t listen or watch his show – so I’m going to refer to his co-star as “costar”
<howard> so I was raving about your record and everything, ya know? And so this guy calls up and goes ‘yo howard man, I’m a disc jockey, and I’m telling ya, I saw Lauryn on MTV… <Lauryn>ok, ok <howard> …and she was screaming about…how no white people would ever buy her record. <Lauryn> laughs <costar> no I think the quote was, “she would rather starve…” <howard> yeah yeah, she would rather have her…children starve than…have white people buy her record <Lauryn> now listen… doesn’t that sound retarded? <howard> man <costar> cause we had a lot of people calling in, saying that! <Lauryn> I think it was probably taken out of context. What I was saying was that I make my music for young, black youths because I am a young black youth myself – and that’s the message in my songs. And for people who look and come from the same area I do – that doesn’t mean that my music isn’t universal. <howard> so you never said you don’t want white people buying your albums? <Lauryn> come on, I’m not stupid… I’m a musician but I’d also like to consider myself a business woman <howard> I mean, your manager is a white guy, right? <Lauryn> yeah, he is. <howard> see, right. <costar> so how.. what was said? <howard> she just told you what was said… okay I’ll get the guy on the phone. <Lauryn> to tell you the truth… I don’t know what specifically was said, but I know it wasn’t anything like, “white people, please don’t buy my record.” <howard> right <Lauryn> it was something along the lines when they ask how does it feel to be a triple platinum recording artist…and I said that it was nice feeling, I appreciate the sales, but that… that’s not why I make my music. There are deeper meanings behind every rap and every song…and everything. <howard> <Lauryn> I mean it’s not just to go triple platinum and nor was I going to change my format just because I was triple platinum <howard> so in other words, you never… are you anti-white? <Lauryn> am I anti-white? No, I’m…I’m anti-destructive-social-situations-that-cause-hostility-and-anger-in-the-ghetto <howard> but are you against white people buying your music? <Lauryn> no, not at all. <howard> oh, well then. Ok here’s some guy who wants a rap deal… ok so who are you – Kenny? <Kenny> yeah how you doing.. howard? Hows it going man? Listen…I don’t even know what you got on the show, man. <howard> what? Got who? Who, who Lauryn? <Kenny> I was at [some show], and she said…we make music for black people, we don’t want…we want the white people off the dance floor. <howard> is that true?! <Lauryn> HAHAHHHAA! I never said that in my life! <howard> wow, really? <Kenny> aight, aight – whateva. <howard> you’re saying that she asked the white people to leave the dance floor? <costar> “Leave the dancefloor!” <Lauryn> [laughing] I never said that in my life. <Wyclef> [also on the line] – Yo Howard! <howard> yeah? <wyclef> if anyone would say that yo – it’d be wyclef, yo. But I didn’t say that. <howard> really? [everyone laughs] <Lauryn> man, I never said that <howard> ok now this is in defense too…aright, let me see. This guy, hey you there dude?…is this Sean? <Sean> yeah hey you know it. <howard> ok, hey – this guy called us and told us he [Kenny] definitely saw her say it and all that… we kept questioning him, and then all of the sudden he says “well I’m not sure if she said it.” <costar> OHHH! <Lauryn> ok Sean? <sean> sup <Lauryn> what is it that you heard me say? <Sean> I don’t know… Lauryn you know the vibe going around the street…it’s like, you know, that what people are perceiving, know what I’m saying? <Lauryn> uh, nah actually I’m in Norway right now, so… <howard> oh really? <Lauryn>…so I mean I speak to my peoples, and they don’t tell me any vibe like that <Sean> …yeah you know its all about how you would rather have your family starve than you would… you know, have white people buy your music… <Lauryn> ok, ok [cuts Sean off] first of all, my family will never starve. <Sean> I hear ya. <Lauryn> I’ll do anything that I possibly have to do that… so my family doesn’t starve. <howard> [he acts like the ass that he is] <Sean> ok – so, yo, wyclef? <wyclef> yo! <Sean> listen up man, this is how it happened. We were in the club, and that’s how it started, you know what I’m saying? <wyclef> mmhm <Sean> and there was more talk than there was action, I’m sure. But…as you remember back in the [back in the day]…it ain’t like that. And I know you ain’t no black-on-black or white-on-white <wyclef> ok so this is who, sean? <sean> you know it. <wyclef> ok so you know from [back in the day] <sean> ok listen – [sean sings wyclef style] [everyone starts laughing] <howard> what the hell we talking about here? <costar> I don’t know, we lost you. [howard is being a jerk] <costar> ok you know what it is.. it’s a bunch of rumors… <howard> ok, lets clear this all up. <sean> man, I heard you were a lesbian too. <howard> who was a lesbian? <Lauryn> man, you’re not gonna find more of a heterosexual than me…. I’m confident in my sexuality. I’m not… yo no need to prove it to anybody….ok let me just clear this up for Sean. You know what though? When people are not aware of what you’re doing, when they don’t know who you’re sleeping with or who you are messing with, and they’re not sleeping with you themselves… they like to spread rumors… hold on, now Sean. We’ve been around for a long time – I’ve been with the Fugees for 7 years, and I’ve never heard any of these rumors along the whole, 7 years. And now that we have become successful, I hear in Norway that I’ve been shot, I’m a lesbian, and now I’m a white-racist baby-killer. And I’m none of those things. <sean> lemme tell you something… the rumor is spreading fast. <Lauryn> that’s okay though. Because you know what? That comes with the territory. I’m real confident with who I am… I’m real confident of the music we make. [howard continues to be a jerk]…
for now, this is the best i could do. i have to finish recording some music tracks.. on afrodrums and piano and everything. give me a while, and i'll finish typing up the interview. for now... above right there gives you an idea of the flow of things, and lauryn hill's perspective on the BOGUS rumors going on about her.
thanks for clearing that up for me fugees-online.
peace.

wow, thanks for typing all that... appreciate it!
so basically the conclusion is: when lauryn hill was asked how it would feel to have multi platinum success, she said she would also be happy if the fugees would only sell a couple to the black community. THEN it got twisted into she doesnt want white people to buy her records.... bullshit.
peace!

LET's PUT THIS RUMOR TO REST!!!!!Claim: During an MTV interview singer Lauryn Hill said, "I would rather die than have a white person buy one of my albums." Status: FALSE.Origins: In 1996 a caller to the Howard Stern show claimed Lauryn Hill of The Fugees made anti-white statements during an MTV interview, to the effect that she rather see her child starve than have a white kid buy her album. The inflammatory comment Hill supposedly made varies: "If I'd known white people were going to buy my last album, I never would have recorded it." "I would rather have my children starve than have white people buy my albums." "I would rather die than have a white person buy one of my albums." Sometimes the rumor is reported as: When asked on MTV about their feelings on having the number one album in the nation, The Fugees said they'd "rather see babies starve and die than have white kids" buy their album. Let's put this one to rest — if Hill or any other member of the Fugees had said anything like that on MTV or anywhere else, the tape of those remarks would have hounded them ever after. That no one can produce this tape — or even agree on what was said, and by whom — should drive a stake through this rumor's heart. MTV would later announce the allegation against Hill wasn't true, but by then it was too late — the rumor was already in motion. In the wake of this slander, Hill did call in rebut the comment on the Howard Stern Show. On numerous other occasions, she has denied saying anything remotely resembling the statement credited to her. In response to her critics, she offered: "What I did say was that I love my people, black people, and I will continue to make music for them." [Teen People, April 1999] Lauryn insists she wants people to understand that her goal to improve the self-love of young African-American women should never be confused with advocating racial supremacy. "There are a lot of young black girls who I meet in my travels who don't have a lot of self-esteem," she explains. "So if I communicate to them that they're beautiful, no white person should find fault in that. It doesn't mean that young white girls aren't beautiful, because they are just as beautiful." Would any recording artist be foolish enough to request that a segment of the music-buying public boycott her works? This quote is likely a backlash born of Hill's success, one that parallels the specious Tommy Hilfiger rumor ("If I knew that Blacks and Asians were going to wear my clothes, I would have never designed them"). It is possible one of Hill's many Black-positive statements was misconstrued as a white-negative comment by someone possessed of questionable listening skills and regurgitated as such. The Hilfiger and Hill rumors, though similar, display a curious dichotomy. Although no other tales circulate about Hilfiger's alleged racism, we continue to receive many different reports claiming that even if Hill didn't make the statement attributed to her here, she has disparaged non-Blacks in other words and deeds (usually ones the teller asserts he — or someone he knows — personally witnessed). Whether this phenomenon says more about the subject or the audience is something we don't yet know. Barbara "hilling me softly" Mikkelson Sightings: A lyric from "Cum On Everybody," a Eminem song off the 1999 The Slim Shady LP, states "Bought Lauryn Hill's tape so her kids could starve." Yea! I can't believe it either, but it's a FACT that this rumor is still out there...just yesterday, I was talking to a guy from the States, we were talking about music and (of course) we came to talking bout Lauryn and he was like "well, isn't she a little racist? Didn't she say [blah blah blah]" and I was like OMG, I can't believe you just said that...LOL. I cleared it all up. Aww man. But really, when you speak to someone who isn't a real Lauryn fan, first thing he'll say is "I've heard she is a racist and said...." . Sad.

You know I had this very same conversation on the Glastonberry forum! I was checking it to see if Lauryn was on the line-up and I noticed the racial comments and I couldn'nt help myself.... Just had to set the record straight!
That rumour has done sooooooooooo much damage for Lauryn. Eminem didn't help when he put that line in his rap about her kids starving because he bought her record, that just gets more people thinking its true. I can't honestly see how this will go away now, if people are still talking about it 9 years later it seems destined to haunt Lauryn forever! As you say Mombasa, its so sad!

He is such a little kid crying over every little fart. I am soooo tired of him, I'd really like to talk to him for a while

Hi Guys,
This is my first time in this forum and let me just say that i have never heard these rumours!! maybe cause i am a Tongan living in Australia- (i don't know) all i know is this-- There will always be people who will try and kill anything that is good and if people like to waste their time talking S**T than that only proves that Lauryn is still and always will be important. To quote Lauryn herself "some people want fantasy but what they need is reality" and if they need fantasy to get by that is their own demon to fight.
To all true Lauryn Hill fans i say this "In the end we remember not the words of our enermies but the silence of our friends" - MLK so like Jaypeg don't let them silence us!! let try to clear the BULLS**T up and if they don't want reality let them live in their fantasy and let reality be ours - The TRUE LAURYN HILL FANS ARMED WITH THE TRUTH.
If anyone wants to continue this conversation send me a message i would love to talk to anyone about my IDOL!!!
God Bless and stay true!!!!
