PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Hip-hop artists Wyclef Jean and Akon are set to perform a free concert in Port au Prince, aimed at improving Haiti's image.
Saturday's Yele Festival was created to showcase Haiti's improved safety record and growing appeal as a tourist destination, festival organizers said.
"Two great artists on one stage in a small island like Haiti will show the world that the country is on course to rebuild its stature in the Caribbean, said Jimmy Rosemond, head of Czar Entertainment and one of the forces behind the festival. "But most of all history is being made by Wyclef becoming the first rapper to be an official ambassador for Haiti, and that, in itself, is a reason for celebration."
Two years ago, Rosemond and Wyclef Jean traveled to Haiti's Citi Soleil to shed light on the country's political and economic plight.
During this trip, they plan to visit local schools, as well as the notorious children's prison, to bring awareness to the existing conditions.
Wyclef Jean is slated to appear with Akon at a 2008 concert in Senegal in a separate effort.
