The taxi followed the car through the busy streets of Tokyo. After over an hour, they stopped in the suburb called Saitama. The passengers got down from both vehicles and the confusion started. The fans were following the star to her next destination (which happened to be our home) and no one was quite sure of what was happening. When they got everything squared away, the fans got their autograph from their sought after star, LAURYN HILL. What a gracious heart, if you'd ask me !
Mark Joseph is a mutual friend of ours. When Lauryn read the Huffpost article about me, <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-joseph/how-to-livehow-to-die-sin_b_8126242.html>, she wrote Mark a one liner reply, "PROFOUND"! Thus started our connection. She was coming to Japan for a series of concerts in Tokyo and Osaka. She voiced her interest in meeting up. WHAT ? Meet up with me? I was in shock !
Attempt #1: She was arriving on the day of our concert and we were hoping she could grace us with her presence. Unfortunately, she arrived way too late. Attempt #2: she had concerts in the city and invited us to be her guests. Unfortunately, I was still unable to leave the house so that didn't work out either. Attempt #3: Her next concert was in Osaka the next day so she sent her band and support team ahead and drove to our home to visit with me personally.
Lauryn walked into my room wearing a mask as she had caught a cold in Japan. She reached out to touch me, wanting to hug, hold my hand, or do something to connect but changed her mind to keep me safe. After we spent a few minutes of pleasantries, what followed was an unbelievable hour of God speaking to me through her.
My initial introduction to Lauryn was when we watched a 16 year old singer/acress in Sister Act 2 and were awed by her talent. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaEH1e_DLm0> A few years passed and I saw her perform her Unplugged album and discovered the thinking soul of this artist. Life went on and I didn't get to follow her from then on.
It's been a while since I sat through a Philosophy class but that's what it felt like as Ken and I spent time with her. We talked about Creation, Jesus being the fullness of the God head, the reality of spiritual warfare ( she never gets a cold but did so this time), the sacred place we are placed in as we perform, the unspoken connection with your audience, the incredible people of Japan, our families, our life purposes and staying faithful to that call, the challenges of being in the Hollywood sphere and being missionaries in Japan. What a brain & heart stimulating hour!
Lauryn said "Who knows, the Lord may have brought me here to Japan to be with you in your sacred place", is what she repeated a few times !
I was quickly fading and she noticed it so we said our goodbyes. Oh, I asked for a hug so I put on my mask and we hugged like old friends would, tightly & long. How can I let this opportunity slip through my fingers without asking her to sing for me? Lauryn gladly obliged. She was so kind to share this song with me and with her permission I share it with you. May you be blessed as my heart was blessed !
The Lord continues to bless me beyond measure as I continue on with my journey. So thankful for His love and care for me, not the least of which is meeting my sister in Christ, Lauryn Hill.
