For quite a while, I've felt the need to create a thread for people to post how Ms. Hill has influenced your life - personally, politically, spiritually etc etc! This could have come through the medium of Ms. Hill's musical material, a chance meeting with her, Unplugged interludes......I could go on and on!.......Please, while we wait for new music, let us remind ourselves why we are here on this particular forum, a common ground for people who LOVE Ms. Hill!!
For me: When I first heard The Score, it scared me slightly! It was a true, real & authentic sound for the streets at that moment in time, still is. Mis-ed dropped, I related to every single track, but most of all ex-factor & forgive them father. Unplugged came along and I was anticipating new material so much, I have and always will regard Unplugged to be a masterpiece in musical history. Mr. Intentional, freedom time etc. GOLD! Fugees reunion 2005ish: Foxy was my favourite, but to be honest, anything with L spitting rhymes would have satisfied my soul!!
Anyway, Ms. Hill has inspired me in so many ways. I'm fortunate enough to have a spiritual outlook on life, I've had addiction issues since very young, this has led me to live in a certain way......eg, living for/in the moment, prayer & meditation, being the best living example and not contridicting my walk & talk. I had the potentially once in a lifetime opportunity to meet Ms. Hill last year in London, it didn't go well. I was still drinking alcohol, drinking too much - I'd been drinking since 11am, by the time I got to meet Ms. Hill, I was a mess to say the least. I did meet her, but made a 100% Ass out of myself, but something happened that evening.....I lost the need to drink, mostly out of shame, but after waiting 20 years to meet this amazing woman, my weak will and taste for alcohol ruined that experience, things needed to change. Ms. Hill indirectly infuenced me to go back to school and study further and deeper in the social sciences. Ms. Hill has influenced me so much in certain ways over the years, I could write for hours! On a final note, it's Ms. Hills courage and brutal honesty regarding social issues, which has kept my chin up, and to keep my voice, with no compromise.

Thanks Scottydog, that was great to read - very inspirational! I'm relating to a lot of it, the Unplugged being a life-changer, being pretty tipsy when I finally met her (well, she is always late!! , and most of all, being encouraged and educated by her message! It's so good to hear of all the positive things you've done and are doing with your life, especially when it sounds like it hasn't always been easy. I think one of the rarest and most precious things about Lauryn Hill's message is the truth and honesty. It really is so refreshing and like water when you're thirsty. it doesn't hurt she's the best lyricist and poet that ever walked the earth IMO! Glad you have found your voice Scottydog, more power to you! Love! x

That was really great of you to share that. All the sensitive children who asked Santa for world peace seem to find it quite a struggle these days. Those people are my tribe lol

I could totally relate to what Scotty has said!! Lauryn's voice is a reminder that God is real and that he is a protector!! He protects his children! So many have targeted Lauryn throughout the years but she continues to get more powerful!! They spread rumors about her being on drugs/crazy/racist...etc.but yet she continues to follow her heart and do things the way she prefers to do them. She is definitely the G.O.A.T!!! ....BY far the bravest artist ever!!..(Vatican speech)...The Unplugged performance blew my mind!!.I've never seen an artist that so many top artist look up to so much since Michael Jackson. Lauryn is truly a gift to "ALL OF US!!" she is a representation for all of us. True she has made mistakes and she's human. To me, that what makes her so special. Every time I heard her voice on the Score it gave me chills. I was in the 10th grade in 1996. My senior year The Miseducation dropped. The honesty is the music is infectious. It's spiritual healing for us. I had the chance to meet her at her Brooklyn show years ago. (I've now seen her 4 times live!) She was so polite and when I told her "I Love You" she replied, "I Love You Too!". (she also held my hand and lead me over to a well lit area so that I could take a pic with her!).. I've been praying for her for over 15 years! I pray for her safety, her health, her happiness and her children! and I also prayed for her "return" to music at the right time! and By the "right time" I mean when she can express herself fully the way she wants us to receive her message. I now believe that my prayers have worked! God Bless all of you! I automatically have love for everyone on this board because we all Love Lauryn!

I think I have benefited from Lauryn Hill's presence in various ways during the various stages of my life to this point. As she grew, so did I. The very first time I can say I tangibly benefitted though was around 2002,2003,2004. Just prior to those years she was arguably the biggest "star" ever and she game it up. I always felt like she gave it up because she realized that life was bigger than the physical. My perception, looking from the outside in, was that she became aware of her spiritual self at the height of her career, and somehow (perhaps obviously) that realization ecliplised all her physical achievements of the day. It's called truly being born again - when you awaken to the fact that you are a spiritual being before being a physical one. Your priorities change. You can't really live until you are aware of your life. How can you live spiritually without an awareness of your spirit; without KNOWLEDGE of it. Her rebirth unfortunately for her (but fortunately for me) played out in the public eye and perhaps had the effect of dragging me too along the path that would one day bring me the point of understanding and facing my true nature, which is spiritual. But at the time, it was for me just a reassurance that living authentically mattered more than money or fame. I lived with almost debilitating physical pain during that time, and her music helped pull me through. I would sit there in my bed in pain, with my awareness so immersed in her music that I could not focus my attention on the pain. She helped pull me through and over the pain. Those painful days are over for me know thanks to knowledge gained. She grew along the way and I did too. I have a thirst for truth and to make known the unknown - a gnostic if even a baby; and I see that in Lauryn Hill as well. Now I benefit from her because it's reassuring to know that there are others out there of the same bent and with the courage to be open minded and to resist the temptation to conform to the expectations of a world that knows little to nothing about life. I have no doubt that she has a very firm understanding of who she truly is and what is truly going on based on some things that she says and does. The person that speaks about the ether, and about ohm is not an un advanced person. She may have some insights into cosmic truths.
When and if I have a children (and especially a daughter), I know they will also benefit from her contributions in the past, in their future. She produces music that provides a necessary counterbalance and that will edify young black girls (and boys) for many years to come. Her joint with Common - Summer - and her song - Zion - are two of the most powerful pro life records I have ever heard. She isn't just pro black, she is pro life! Her whole work seems to be a celebration of life from the temporary physical to the everlasting spiritual. In that context, the number of children she has shouldn't be shocking to anyone. She has a love affair with life itself, in all its manifestations.

Litworth you just Summed up everything i feel about Lauryn Hill (I remember you from the runboard forum, you were always on point :-) ). I have been listening to her since I first heard Boof Baf, it felt good to see a woman rapping with so much ease and content. Then fugeela, miseducation, the unplugged (I cried so many times in front of the DVD, the album helped me overcome a very dark time in my life) solidified my love for her music and, I had to walk, Too much, Consumerism and Neurotic Society confirmed to me that she is on a mission. She is also one of the few artists who speak about Love. She is about something more than what can be physically seen. That's why she needs prayers and positive vibrations, she is on the forefront of a very difficult battle but she seems well equipped. But as her father in law put it, "we know we shall win/cause we believe in the victory of good over evil"...

The miseducation dropped when I was 5 and unplugged when I was 9 so I didn't really know MLH when she was in the spotlight. I really didn't start LISTENING to her music until my senior year in high school during the moving target tour. The unplugged album had struck a chord with me, particularly peace of mind. I was at (shoot still am) a point where I'm discovering who God is to me and what his purpose for me is. That album really articulated many of my feelings and thoughts I was having at that time. Aside from spirituality her music in recent years has really challenged me to take a good look around me and pay attention to world events and examine the bigger picture and question some of the things going on behind the scenes. Finally, I really like her because she does everything on her own terms in an unapologetic nature even when there are threats against her or things do not seem to be in her favor. She's a level of bold that you just can't help but admire.

She has something very special. She's been very blessed by the Most High. She's has a wonderful aura/presence about her.
