I am in love with Lauryn's rendition of "Wild Is the Wind" to me it's her best performance as a singer on this project. Unfortunately I wasn't really feeling NMQTP, it was a little to breathy for my liking. However, I really enjoyed African Mailman, I feel that she stayed true to the original while still injecting her own nuances throughout.

Wild is the Wind was really good. Alice Smith's version of "Put a spell on you" is ridiculously good. Haunting!

I like NMQPT as well. It has alot of energy for a slow song. Also, I am keeping in mind that alot of the Nina Simone songs arent really melodic. Her songs are beautiful art, but many of the songs go against the grain in that they arent melodic, or if they are melodic then the melody is very intricate so one finds it difficult to connect those melodic dots, yet the songs are still beautiful and even 'thrilling'. That style, as well as the writing, is for me where the genuis of Nina Simmone is. With that being said, I very much respect these artists that can produce covers of her songs that are faithful but also new and fresh. I think Lauryn Hill and all the other artists on this album did a great job with Nina's songs.

Maybe the song I've GQot a Life was work since months: I think she recycled lyrics. Thinking back we have to remember that Lauryn has been recording on and off since early '00. ---- Anyway, Wild is the Wind is my favorite song thus far!

Loving it! 'I Got Life' has probably the best performance of any rap song this year. AMAZING flow, she just scalped all the other MCs in the game. But i'm all about 'Wild is the Wind', an absolutely stunning vocal.. she sounds like a Diana Krall type standards singer a little! I kind of wish the production was dialled back a bit more, it feels somewhat heavy for such an ethereal, lyrical, intricate piece. But that's my fave so far, very smooth. I was never heaps into 'NMQP' to be honest, even Nina's version. I'm a native French speaker too so it always sounds a bit silly and badly accented haha - this is a decent rendition though. It's 'African Mailman' that sounds the most like something Nina would do, seriously good capturing of her style. As I said when they were first released, 'Feeling Good' and 'Black' are terrific too. I think this record bodes really well for her upcoming solo work. I hope the overall sound is less cluttered (it suits Simone's music a lot here, though), but i'm loving it overall. As for the others, - The ever-reliable Gregory Porter's 'Sinnerman' is sensual and brilliant, - Common / Lalah doing a very warm re-interpretation of 'Young...' is another high point (great combo, both in fine form), - Despite the obvious studio smoothing of her voice, Mary's contribution is great and i'm happy to see that song here, - 'I Put a Spell on You' by Alice Smith feels a bit of a misstep. I'm all for drastic re-interpretation but it feels flat and passionless. Not the greatest musicianship. - Simone's daughter has done much better elsewhere (especially live) and she's capable of giving 'more' to a song but her track is still very lovely. - Grace's 'Love Me or Leave Me' is gorgeous... has that lush live instrumentation and a bit of a late 90s soulful Love Jones / Mama's Gun vibe with the swirling keys and flute in the mix. One of my favourites. Hopefully this project is a success! I'll definitely be buying a copy, maybe a few for friends as well.

I like all of the Ms Hill's songs, particularly "I've Got a Life" and "Black is the color of my true love's hair", "Feeling good" is also a very successful cover. But, I don't like "Ne me quitte pas" for several reasons: firstly, I am french and I don't like the Ms Hill pronunciation of french language. Secondly, i think she doesn't sing rightlky in this, in particular the first 30 seconds. All the instrumentations are worked and beautiful. I have not well listen yet the other songs, but the Intro by Lisa Simone is very beautiful, I love it. "I Put a Spell on You" is very disappointing, I prefer the Nina Simone version, with her "severe voice"
