So I went to Berlin yesterday to watch the movie during the international film festival.. It was a hell of a trip, really ****ed up... but a apart from that, lets get to the important stuff right away: the movie is great! I really had a good time watching it! Its really funny too... most of the time.
And its soooo great to see all those great artist together onstage, offstage, backstage... having a good time!
The performances itself are -mostly- off the hook. you need to see this in cinemas becasue of the sound! my highlights were definitly MOS DEF! I love this guy!!! when he performed UMI SAYS...
and when Erykah badu joined The Roots & Jill Scott for "You got me" - Jill & Erykah on stage together... bursting out the strangest, yet most beautiful harmonies... priceless.
or Kanye doing JESUS WALKS with the big band from ohio
and I need to stress CODY CHESTTNUT... now, he didnt really perform but there were 2 or 3 songs of his featured... it was him sitting backstage playing guitar and singing! He got some of the best vocals Ive heard..! His songs were amazing.
Dead PRez were great too. Never really got into them that much but Ill definitly will now..
uh, and LMAO @ Erykah Badu ripping off her wig during her performance
now, the only bad thing about the movie is, that you'll probably be disspointed that you can't see the full sets of the artist. It's like: "damn, keep that perofrmance going!" But it would fade out into the documentary... I'd say the perormances are edited and shorted to 2-3 min for each song. Of course, not all songs that were played at the concert made it to the final cut.

Ok now, concering the FUGEES performance: Let me tell you first, you WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED! ...it went like this:
Chappelle is on stage saying something to the amount of: "You know, we have some problems... Ya'll know we had Lauryn Hill to perorm... now unfortunately Columbia Records didn't clear the songs...." The crowd was like... NOOO! Then he continued: "However... Lauryn Hill came up with an idea... Ladies & Gentleman, prepare for a miracle......... THE FUGEEEES! (crowd went nuts)
Then Wylcef begins "yo mona lisa... (still backstage, running on stage wiht the camera following him) - crowd goes nuts again... Then he raps his vers (quite ok by the way) including a short reggae dancehall sample (just like at the GINO performance) - then antoher cammera is filming Laryn Hill in the back of the stage, who is hiding behind some drums or speakers or whaever it was so the crowd couldnt see her - basically waiting for her entrance, observing what Wyclef does...
and Clef gave her the big entrance she apparently wanted... after his verse he paused and shouted: "Yo, people... give it up fooooor Laaaaaaauuuuuryn Hill!!!!" - crowd went wild like never before and Lauryn stepped on stage and began with her verse of Nappy Heads right away... her deliverance was -needless to say- flawless. After her verse, Pras joined and did his verse.
The performance faded out and then there was a short interview backstage... I believe it was only PRas and Wylcef in the room sittin on instruemnts and Pras was talking about how he had beef with clef but that its normal among brothers to have struggles and fights... then he continued and said that -although he is a part of the group- he is also a big fan of both wyclef and lauryn.
And then he told a bit about the reheasals the day before. He said it was amazing to hear Lauryn Hill sing again... that is when he realized that she's a BEAST (that was the word he used)... He said her singing almost made him cry.
Then it would fade into the performance of Killing Me Softly starting with Lauryn Hill singing the intro. It was such an amazing blend: Pras saying her singin almost made him cry and immadiatly Killing Me Softly started... and now, let met tell you, you'll hardly find a live performance where she sounded more angelic. HER VOICE WAS SOOO PURE and smooth, I havent heard her sing like that in ages. It was even better than at the africa unite press conference or essence awards...! especially the intro of KMS!
During the performance she smiled and seemed to enjoy the crowd who were feeling her -needless to say.
Unfortunaly she didnt to the bridge of Killing Me Softly (ohhhuhuhohhh... that part...)
After the songs she asked the crowd: "WHERE YOU BEEN?" - and some responded "where YOU been?!"
She responded: "You asking me where I been? (laughing)... I tell you where I been... pointing in the back of the stage, where there was somebody standing with, I assume it was little John): "Thats where I been!!"
After KMS there was antoher short interview clip with Lauryn Hill basically telling the story how she first met PRas and Wyclef (the batman button story). During the interview, she had a vibe I never saw her with before... It was really different... I dont know how to explain it. I didnt really recognize her from the way she talked and moved... but I guess you need to see it yourself. There wasnt really anyting negativ about the way she bahaved, just different.
After that there was Wyclef Jean perfroming "President" - not on stage---- it was more like a spontanous performance on the piano - somwhere backstage- He played for the kids of the marching band. And then he held a little speech to the kids... basically encouraging them to "get theirs" - read books and work hard. And not to make the mistage to "blame everything on the whites" - stuff like that.
I REALLY hope the DVD includes ALL performance... with that voice of hers I bet LOST ONES and the rest of the songs were just AS amazing.
peace!
