Lauryn Hill Concert, Palomar Starlight Theater - Casino in Pala, CA
REVIEW by KhulamiPhase (from Runboard)
I just got back from the Pala show and wanted to write down everything while it was fresh in my head. I will start off by saying this…I had an AMAZING time and enjoyed myself tremendously. I know people will say I’m defending Lauryn and this and that…but that it the theme of my story. I thought it was a great show and the audience seemed to agree. This is my opinion only, so I don’t even want to hear all of the naysayers.
The theatre was so cool. It was outside next to the pool and behind the hotel part of the casino and had the mountains to the left. Beautiful view of the sky and scenery. It looked like a wedding, with many white folding chairs set up on the grass. It was fairly small setting and intimate.
At 7:30 someone came out to make a few announcements about upcoming shows then said Lauryn would be out soon. At about 8:00 someone else came out and read an announcement off of a paper saying that due to strenuous travel and illness Lauryn’s voice was raspy and she had been in with the doctor during the day. He said Lauryn did not want to disappoint us by canceling the show so she was going to come out soon and give us her very best. (and that she did). The fans started cheering and then the guy said that’s what she needed…our enthusiasm.
At about 8:15-8:20 the band came out and started playing. Then Lauryn came out and was warming up. She greeted us and said she wanted to take a little time to set the mood. She just kept building up her warm up vocals (see videos) up and up until she was ready to start singing. She started with two Bob songs then said she was going to do something we recognized…Lost Ones. She then mixed some reggae/Bob Marley songs with her hits then some Fugees stuff.
She mentioned about half way in, “Oh man, I couldn’t even talk when I got up this morning I don’t know how I’m getting these notes out!” She played for about 2 hours, and did 4 songs for her encore. It looked like someone who worked for the casino in a black suite kept coming on stage telling Lauryn something (probably her time was up) because she then said, “we don’t have much time left but I want to play something new…something you may or may not have heard…Lose Myself.” The encore was Killing Me Soflty, Lose Myself, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, and an Amazing version of Doo Wop. During Doo Wop she would go, “ok, just the ladies” then sing “some guys…some guys…” then she did, “ok all you gentlemen…some girls, some girls…” Lauryn thanked the audience, grabbed her purse then walked off stage after Doo Wop. For some reason…someone from her band then came out and tried riling the crown up and making us think she was going to come back out but she didn’t.
Lauryn gave 100% energy the whole time. She was dancing like crazy, she sang her heart out even when her voice wasn’t there. She tried so hard you could tell. She kept getting sips of water. The audience was going nuts the whole time cheering her on. It seemed like they loved it as much as I did. People were even singing along to Lose Myself and seemed to know the words
Take from it what you will, but this is one person’s experience. . I had a great time and thought it was worth every penny and the wait to see her for my first time.
