"It's been going on for years. It's one of those things, for the sake of the group and for
Lauryn, for everybody else I kept my mouth shut..." - Pras
Five quiet years after his solo debut, Fugees founder Pras is on a mission to reclaim his
spot at the top of the game, first with a mixtape album and then with his long overdue follow
up LP, Cold Fire. Coincidentally, his return has been marked with a highly personal diss
record courtesy of former Fugee and "cousin" Wyclef Jean. Though he's still busy putting
the finishing touches on his sophomore LP, Pras took time to shed light on his beef with
Wyclef in an exclusive interview with SOHH.com from his Manhattan studio.
Last month, Wyclef released "Fake Ass Pras," a diss record on which he takes several
below the belt shots at Pras, more notably stating that Pras owes him publishing for writing
"Ghetto Superstar." "Clef never wrote anything for me. If that's what he wants to say he can
have that," Pras confidently told SOHH.com. "As a matter of fact I think he's giving me more
props. If you're supposed to be that dude, how the hell are you just giving away publishing
without a dude putting a gun to your head?"
In another jaw dropping moment on the diss track, Clef downplays Pras role in the Fugees
as that of a sidekick, rhyming "Every fan wants to see the Fugees back together / the only
thing they don't want is the third member." However, Pras remembers a time when things
were quite different. "I started the group. It was me, Lauryn and another girl. And he was in
another wack ass group and he kind of begged me to be in the group," Pras declared. "That
was my man back then. I was like, yo dog let's do this. Let's go make history together. Why
not?"
Though he said that the diss caught him by surprise, Pras also admits to his own ill words
towards his former partner." Yeah I said some stuff. I ain't really diss him. It was more like I
expressed how I felt because I felt like he dissed me... people didn't catch it because I
wasn't vocal about it," said Pras who would only refer to Clef as "dude" throughout the
interview. "I was shocked because it's that line that I felt he crossed. And it's that line that a
man crosses where there's no coming back. It's like raping a woman. What chu gon say, I'm
sorry. No ni99a, why the f#@$ did you do it to begin with?"
Pras admits that the tension that recently blew up has been building up for years, indicating
that though The Fugees were seemingly tight -- drama was just around the corner. "It's
been going on for years. It's one of those things, for the sake of the group and for Lauryn,
for everybody else I kept my mouth shut," Pras said reflectively. "This dude dissed me
countless places... in The Source... little slick sh!t. And just as my man I felt like he wasn't
there for me... so I felt like I should diss too."
Many in the Hip-Hop community are dumbfounded as to what could cause two close-knit
cousins not to speak for over a year. Pras maintains that he and Clef weren't cousins, just
great friends. "We grew up together. We used to sleep in the same bed together. I mean we
was tight like that. I was basically an extended son or brother."
Though he's obviously vexed by Clef's attacks, Pras is sort of turning the other cheek,
advising his former friend to do the same. While most emcees use mixtapes as a vehicle to
diss their counterparts, Pras simply warns Clef on his forthcoming mix CD. "I'm basically
telling him, just chill. You don't really want me to get a personal record on him. He doesn't
want that. Because dude got so much skeletons in his closet, I would blast the dude so
crazy," Pras emphatically said. "Maybe he forgot that I know him. I think all his people got
him so gassed he doesn't really know before all those f#@$in yes men and those thingy
suckin motherf#@$ers around him, like he doesn't understand, I know him. Like when
homeboy used to put a Jheri Curl in his hair when he used to work at a beauty store."
Pras is speaking out though he downplays the impact of his former friend's recent actions.
"It's like a dude that got to watch a porno flick to bust a nut instead of actually going and
really f#@$ing a beeyatch. That's what I call what he did, a cheap thrill."
