(for audiophiles: the sound was great for an outside concert (personally i prefer indoors than outdoors for better sound), sometimes the bass was more on teh bloated side than on the tight acurrate side, more so earlier on in the concert. i just think audiophiles would like to know this)
dj irie (judging on between sets) aka the miami heat dj: he didnt do anything incredible with the turntables while i was there, but i wasnt there during his dedicated 2 hour set to see if he did do some great turntablism, but i doubt it. im not doubting his skill, but i dont think the audience there would know how to appreciate that and i think he knows that. he kept it simple, sometimes he was annoying with his talking (let the records do the work please). song selection was good at most times, but you can tell he was running out of stuff to play because of lauryn hill's unprofessional ass (explained later). but he did manage to prevent a long broing stretch between india.arie and the roots.
politiks: i came in mid set, but pretty much to describe them they are a good average bar band. they're a new band so maybe they will get better over time. ill check for them later, but as right now i would go to a bar they performancing at but not pay 35 to go see just them at a venue
india.arie: (begin hate) her arrangements sucked, and her singing was made more for backup singing then lead. i was turned off by her performance so i wasnt paying too much attention. oh yeah she looks stupid with her "wings" on. and the no hair and guitar is meshell ish not hers. (end hate)
uhh... Lauryn Hill: im assuming that she was ego tripping and didnt want to come before the roots or why would the band would come out knowing that she wasnt there?
so she went on between roots and al green, for about 20 minutes and had a great band, great arrangements, great performance until they cut her mics midset, so al green can go on with any problems (city noise limits). but this chick had her band keep playing wihtout powered mics. imo if your going to be unprofessional and not come on stage on time, then squeeze yourself between 2 acts (1 of which EVERYONE wants to see) then you should cut the set short some.
also some of the equipment that hill's band used was some of the roots (?uest and kunckles drums, kamal keys, dont know what else)
?uest this show would be a great myspace blog. coughcouhgcoughHINTcough.
The Roots: (im going to be more nitpicky about the roots, mostly because im much more familar with their show than the others. no hate here at all, its was a dope show put on by them)
they didnt start off the GT setlist here. so the setlist was similar to the 311 shows except no luna e blues and toss in dont feel right (DFR). DFR sounds much better with the studio polish than the live rawness, but you guys already know how i feel about DFR. ?uesto drums came off as litle too abhrasive and dirty for me (dont know why it didnt do that during Hill's set, maybe because the bigger band drowned out the drums some).
hub played the same solo, ?uest & knuckles did another amazing solo (i like how their solo never seems to be the same), kamal did his 101 solo (which you guys know that now im tired of, but this time there weren't so many covers in the set (i think 1 before kamal's solo), so the show wasn't redudant of covers). now capt kirk stole the spotlight out of teh roots setlist. first he started off with a style that reminded me of the bob marley guitar solos (solos not riffs) then went off into different styles and his singing was great but BT didnt seem like he could just let the man do his thing sometimes and played hyped man for a singer. oh yeah BT didnt have 1 flaw the whole show besides that.
you could see, what looks like, stage managers running up to ?uest telling him to cut it short a couple of times during their set. maybe it was to squeeze in time for hill, but the roots kept playing anyways (good for them, good for us).
lastly they ended with get by and had talib come on stage for a surprise. it was great. however talib was unclear for the 1st verse, then forgot his next verse, then did a freestyle. how many times is this forgetting verses going happen?
im surprised that the roots didnt come on early when hill didnt. im sure that he have a full set ready and was prepared for it (especially if they managed to save the 1st night of rcmh after its short comings)
Al Green: he was without a doubt best of show (lauryn hill could have been best of show if she would have been professional). great arrangements, did some exciting covers, great stage presence. pretty much he was flawless. hopefully there are some good recordings of this. i wish that he did more of his songs than covers and also that he did an encore, but the audience was gay and started to leave early. maybe it was noise limits that prevented encore. al green will definitely get my money if he did another show in florida.
oh yeah his 2 dancers reminded me off of what big daddy kane used to do.

not a good look, L. a lot of those people in the audience and the peers your performed with LOVE you. You have such a powerful influence and you have to be careful what you do with it and USE it while you still have it.

I've found this photo few minutes ago. There weren't any credits, but I think it has been taken during the Lauryn's performance @ the soulfull saturday festival. She has the same clothes in the photo and in the movies. Look and contrast:

Please post a sincere thank you to Dazonne on run board. I am not registered over there. But, I thank him so much for the video he shot of Ms. Hill. I have been reading okaypayer board and it shuts their ass up real quick when those videos are posted following one of their attacks on Lauryn. Thanks also for whoever was smart enough not to argue with them, but let them see it and weep.
I LOVE IT!

I will tell dazonne! YES, thats right! I also argue alot with people at okayplayer. sometimes its hard to defend her behaivour because it REALLY seems plain rude... but you are right, with her performance she pretty much defended herself in a way. I LOVE the band and the new arrangements. She just needs to quit beeing sooooo damn late -
